SP1 problems or why I wish I didn't get it

I have installed SP1 on a Compaq F730US notebook.
Laptop has 2 gb. of memory.

Installation went find but serious problems occur when I try to "move
files" from one External hard drive to another external had drive.

When I use File , move to folder, the actual movement takes to long
when both USB 2 external hard drives are connected via an USB 2 hub.
Even when I remove the hub, it appears to be as slow.

and

when the move is complete, the original folder ( now empty) may remain
but now empty.

and

when you move a folder, etc, Windows may or may be correct when it
estimates the time remaining. In one case, one folder that contained
15 gb's of data, remained at 10 seconds for about 25 minutes. Also the
time remaining, may or may not work.

Hello, Its best to plug hard disks directly on the USB's of the motherboard
and not let them pass through the HUB. Use the hub for printers scanners or
other devices.
Why? You need the best speed possible for the hard disks, and when you have
2 disks on one hub,
they have to "SHARE" the maximum bandwidth of USB2, that means if the drives
are (reading for example) at the same time, they get 50% of ONE USB slot
each...

while if you plug each one directly onto the usb of the motherboard you will
have better results...

also some HUBS are not that compatible as they would like us to believe


Try connecting directly to the computer without the HUB and post back..

I bet you will see a significant increase in performance

I actually would using a hub AT ALL COSTS if possible.

there are some PCI to USB 2.0 cards

or even better yet, I would have all externals use SATA connectors
there are of course enclosures for external hard drives that are SATA,
that way you would have the speed of SATA as an external drive...

there are "brackets" that you put on the slots that convert internal SATA
connections
so that you can plug it easily from the back of the PC...

these are nothing more than an "extension" bracket, no electronics involved.

I have SP1 on my desktop running Vista Ultimate 32bit. I have had no
problems whatsoever and in fact everything runs much faster and better. I
couldn't be more satisfied with the service pack, although I do look forward
to SP2 whenever it is released. Vista SP2 should do for Vista what XP SP2
did for XP.
I have two suggestions for you. First, I would add the "copy to"/ "move
to" option to my right click menu as it makes things much easier concerning
file/folder transfers. Secondly, I have two external drives formatted in
NTFS using a firewire connection, the firewire connection being must faster
than regular USB 2. You should consider adding firewire functionality to
your laptop provided you have the resources to do so.
Many computer vendors are adding firewire capabilities to their laptops
now. I am surprised your laptop did not come with firewire connections. Were
they an option when you ordered your laptop or did you simply purchase your
laptop from a dealer?
