I have Windows XP Pro SP1 and when I goto Microsoft site to try to install
Sp2 it takes me to a place where it checks my computer for updates - Express
or Custom. After it downloads 65 updates it tells me to restart my computer.
My computer still says SP1 and when I go back to the site it tells me that my
computer is not up to date and wants to install the 65 updates again. I've
done it both ways "Express" and "Custom". Going around in circles.
Thanks

Instead download SP-2 or order SP-2 on CD.
Both options Step 1 on this page:

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP
installation
