When installing Vista SP1 on a Sony notebook the process hangs at 56% during
phase 3. I have left the machine for many hours with no indication of any
progress being made (no HD Led flashes and absolutely no feedback re
problem).

Can anyone shed any light on how to get past this point, please?

George

PS Apologies if this question has appeared before but I could not find such
a thread today.

If Sony sold it to you with Vista, you are going to have to ask Sony how to
install SP1. (They probably need to provide you with a better driver for
some hardware device)

How to uninstall Windows Vista SP1 as a troubleshooting step:

Microsoft Support via Phone only at (866) 234-6020 for SP1 issues.

George - yes, the question has appeared before (I asked it a month ago,
when I installed SP1 :-). I have an Acer, not a Sony, but I think the
problem is with a (still running) Anti-virus or antispy program,
blocking the progress (and completion) of SP1 .

I finally tired of waiting and pressed the 'off' button. It is risky,
but I felt I had no choice.

On reboot, choose the 'safe mode' boot-up.

If things are OK, the install process will pick up where left it left
off, and complete to 100%. However, in my case, after 'successful
install' the program decided to 'revert changes' and go to square one.
(That is good news)

When you try to re-install SP1 again, make sure all ant-virus,
ant-spyware and other busy-body programs (including sleep mode) are
turned off.

It worked for me, I have had SP1 since. I hope it works out OK for you too.

Many thanks for your response.

I was very careful about turning-off all running programs before starting
the installation.

Since posting the query, my Sony PC has come up with a message stating that
SP1 failed to install and that changes are being reverted. Some hope!! It's
been 'reverting, for a few hours and has now jammed up in this mode. (Will
Microsoft ever get anything fit for purpose??)

I'll wait long into the night in a forelorn hope that something will work in
the end. At present I have a useless PC !!!!

Thanks again,
George

PS It's now 11.20 am and the PC has re-booted a few times and each time it
comes up with a message stating that it needs to re-install Windows from
DVD/CD (which I don't have as it was pre-installed on the PC). After
clicking the OK button, I get the message that SP1 failed to install and
changes are being reverted. And so on and so forth round and round we go
but get nowhere!!

Thanks Adam,

I presume that the telephone number you have given me is in the States. I'm
in the UK where we are considered lesser mortals by Microsoft and I'm sure
I'll get a curt reply if I try to contact them (as has been the case on
previous issues associated with sub-standard products from Microsoft!)

Regards,
George

Thanks for your response.

If you're interested, there has been a development (see my reply to one of
the responses below).
The big problem is that the PC just jams up and it is impossible to get to
the Start button (never get the screen with that option) as all I get is a
message that SP1 failed to install and changes are being reverted. This has
been the case for over 15 hours now!!! Surely, nothing can take THAT long!!

All else failing, I'll see what I can do with what you suggest but I feel
that Microsoft is
letting its customers down in the end.
