I downloaded Vista SP1 and then tried to download Defender but my computer
wouldn't pass the validation test. It had until then! I uninstalled SP1
and then tried but it still wouldn't allow me to download. My copy of Vista
premium is legal and was on my computer when purchased it in August 2007.
What now?

Try a system restore point prior to SP1 if you have one available.

While I do not doubt your word for it that your Windows Vista is legal,
you should be aware of certain conditions that should be met that may or
may not assist in determining the legality of you Vista:

- Were you supplied with a original Vista installation DVD, or some
manner of recovery disc from the computer manufacturer?
- If you answered "No" to question 1 above, is there a hidden
partition on your hard disk that contains the recovery options? This
hidden partition can be accessed by some sort of hotkey sequence when
turning on the computer - consult with your user manual for this
sequence. The computer should also have some manner of utility
software that you can use to make a bootable backup copy of this
recovery partition.
- Do you have a "Proof of License Certificate of Authenticity" (COA)
sticker somewhere on your computer? This is what makes it legal. I
could send you an ISO image of my Vista DVD, and it will still be a
legit install if you use the number that is located on this COA
sticker. If you answered no to all 3 questions, then you may be the victim of an
unscrupulous reseller that installed a hacked copy of Vista onto your
computer. The two most common methods for doing this are as follows:

- "Grace Period Hack" - This basically resets the Activation timer
from 3 day to 99 years, so that Vista never needs to be activated.
- "OEM BIOS Hack" - This hack emulates a legitimate volume license
computer BIOS so that Vista does not require activation.Microsoft is aware of these 2 common methods (amongst others) of hacking
activation in Vista, and has structured Vista SP1 to detect them, and
flag the installation as invalid.

It was purchased in august 2007.
If it was not activated, and checked out, it would not still be going!!!

Hi,

First, Windows Defender is already part of Vista, so downloading it would be
pointless. Just type it into the search line and hit <enter> to open it up.

For problems with WGA, go to:
