SP1 Update Issues

Earlier today when I turned on my computer it seems there was a bad install
of the update - I was getting all kinds of errors about unrecoverable errors,
etc. Couldn't get it to boot. I used the Vista CD, restored to yesterday's
pre-update backup, and after some fits & starts I got the computer to start
up (don't know how long it took , but I know it was in excess of 45
minutes)....we left to go shopping for 2 hours and when we returned it was
working.

I just went to shut down and the computer automatically installed the
update again. When I tried to turn it back on it has been hanging on a black
screen for 30 minutes (and counting) now. Any thoughts on what is causing
this? This is a custom built machine - IIRC AMD 3800+xp, 2 GB Ram, EVGA
6700GT (or something like that) video card, new 550W power supply, and a
couple other bells and whistles. This is the first problem I've really had
with Vista so far...except some previous issues copying files.

Just an update....now I'm getting the errors again - they actually read:
"File record segment XXXXX is unreadable."
It's saying that for a whole lot of them...and it's going very slowly. It's
hanging at:
"10 percent complete. (1 of 180 bad file records processed).

Is it possible this is related to the update (which I realized after posting
may not be SP1 - but it was pushed out to my computer yesterday).

Sounds like bad hardware - hard disk drive or controller - possibly bad ram
or bad power...
