SP1 Update not in Available Updates List

Hi,

I have two computers running Windows Vista Ultimate. When SP1 became
available, it immediately appeared in the Available Updates list (in fact as
the only one until I installed it, then others were re-listed again), but
only on one of the two computers. On the other one, I continue to see all
other updates but not SP1. It's not in the Updates History and the Help|About
still shows version 6.0 (no Build 6001 or Service Pack 1 indicated). I read
in MS articles that it is advisable to isntall SP1 from the Available Updates
window rather than force download and install from the MS website. Is there
an explanation for this or should I just give up and explicitly get it from
the MS website?

the explanation is that some driver is probably blocking it...

there are 7 top reasons why you cant see the update... I posted this when
sp1 first came out.

find all latest drivers for your computer install them and try again.

Go to the site of the manufacturer and look for any prerequisite updates or
drivers too for your pc.

I hate to say this but you are WRONG. Windows Vista Service Pack 1 is
available through Windows Update. I was able to receive it through
Windows Update. I was able to download it through Windows Update. I
was able to install it through Windows Update. I did all of this
after seeing it through Windows Update.

This same situation applies to me. I have two computers, one I bought
in December, and SP1 was applied about one month ago with no problems.
My main computer, built last August, has not been offered SP1, and it
does not show in the Windows Update. Both are running Vista Home
Premium.

I checked "Cause 5" as mentioned above, and the only one that "could"
apply to me is the Realtek drivers. Mine weren't that old, but I went
to my motherboard website, and d/l'd the latest. I checked, and I
still am not offered SP1. I checked all the other drivers, and Windows
said I am using the most recent.

What's going on and why can't I upgrade to SP1? I am reluctant to just
download the whole, huge program from MS if it's going to fail for
some reason.

My Vista is less than 9 months old, and there's a problem updating it
already? This is crazy! I have all updates installed automatically,
and I am up to date as of last night. I have no hidden updates as
mentioned in the above link and only show two optional updates
offered.

Any further thoughts or help here?

I had the same problem and after checking the audio drivers they were all
updated (or so I thought). Then I was offered a more up-to-date (or more
compatible?) driver for my audio device through WU and I was then offered
SP1. Only thing I can say is keep checking your device manufacturers site
or keep checking WU for optional device drivers and eventually you will be
offered the SP through WU. Or download the stand alone version (I didn't
want to do that myself).

OK, I went through every device on my system, updated drivers that
weren't very old. I was reluctant to do this as my system was running
smoothly, but I did it just in case. Remember, I built this system
new in August of 07, so it's only 9 months old. At that time, I had
installed all the latest drivers available. I again checked Win
Update, and SP1 does not show as being available. WU doesn't show any
updates available now. WU works, as I'm getting the Defender updates
and something called "Silverlight" that I allowed thinking it might be
preventing SP1 from showing up.

My other system, a Dell that I bought in Dec of 07, was offered the
update almost immediately when it became available last month.

I'm at a loss that Windows Vista has made updating to the newest, more
secure version, impossible. Do I attempt to download the full version
from MS, and chance that it will install without problems, or continue
to wait? Please don't point me toward that same link:

there a magic word I have to say to get my system to update?

A very frustrated Vista Premium user!

LOL! I was a little disgusted by that same link myself. Now concerning
your situation, when I contacted MS support when I hadn't received SP1
through WU they said if I didn't want to wait for the SP to come through WU
to download the stand alone version, and after it was downloaded disable all
security software, install the service pack then re-enable all security
software...of course my hold up was thinking there must've been a
conflicting driver somewhere that wasn't allowing the SP to appear. After
waiting, an updated audio driver (Cosecant) came through WU. After
installing SP1 I had to roll back the driver to the original one (as the new
one was giving me no-sound issues) and everything has been fine so far.
Send an email or call MS support and ask them if they have had others with
your audio/video devices had trouble with SP1 appearing and perhaps they can
offer some advice.

Good luck in your endeavor. I'm sure you'll be fine downloading the stand
alone version.
