Please answer the following questions...
- Verify what operating system (edition and version/service pack especially)
you have now. You can do this using the following directions:
Start button --> RUN
(no "RUN"? Press the "Windows Key" + R on your keyboard)
--> type in:
winver
--> Click OK.
The picture at the top of the window that opens will give you the general
(Operating System name) while the line starting with the word "version"
will give you the rest of the story. Post _both_ in response to this
message verbatim. ;-)
- Is your system 32-bit or 64-bit?
- What antivirus software are you currently running and is it current with
antivirus definitions?
- What antispyware applications are you running/have you scanned your
systems with lately?
- What lead you to just trying to get Service Pack 1 onto your computer now?
Did you have to re-install for some reason?
- Is there anything preventing you from just installing Service Pack 2?
My suggestion - above and not pending on the answers above - is to scan your
system with the following applications (no matter how protected you think
you currently are):
Download, install, run, update and perform a full scan (separately) with the
following two applications (freeware versions are the ones to use for this):
SuperAntiSpyware
http://www.superantispyware.com/
MalwareBytes
http://www.malwarebytes.com/
After performing a full scan with one and then the other and removing
whatever they both find completely, you may uninstall these products,
if you wish.
Download and run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/ma...e/default.mspx
Reboot.
If you have a third-party firewall application - remove it/disable it.
Check for updates again.
