SP2..... 23:data error (cyclic redundancy check)

Restored my machine this week to original manufacturers config (Fujitsu).
Dowmlaoded all the patches and SP1. One patch keeps failing as does SP2, the
error message is that service pack 2 could not back up the registry key to
file and the data error message 23 above.
The patch that failed was security update kb840987........kb909520 also failed
SP2 concerns me though, any advice/solutions please
