To avoid all installation problems, hardware and sotware conflicts try this.

first backup all personal data and system drivers, then do a full reinstall
of XP after formating hard drive. Next before you do anything else install
SP2 from DISC ONLY. Then reinstall system drivers and then your ISP
conection, first call should be to windows update to check you have all the
latest patches. I know it seems a bit drastic but I was having lots of
problems with SP2 like everyone else with a 64, but everything works
perfectly after this. I think most problems have been with software conflicts
so who knows this might work on non-64 machines.
