Sp2 & Automatic Updates

When the hard disk on my pc was re-formatted, the person I hired to do it for
me re-loaded Sp1, and then left me to re-load Sp2 from a CD I got from
Microsoft. I cannot access Automatic Updates no matter what I try. Did I
need to have Sp1 re-loaded? I received the Sp2 CD only 3 weeks ago, so it is
quite up-to-date.
Thanks.

The SP2 update includes all the SP1 stuff and everything betwen SP1 and the
release of SP2. Therefore, you did not need to go from XP to SP1 to SP2;
going straight from XP to SP2 would have been just fine.

Are you saying there is no Automatic Updates icon in Control Panel? Or that
it isn't working at all?

"Gertrude",

Please go ahead and install SP2 from CD. You might want to consider the
following two checklists, first:
1. Short URL: http://tinyurl.com/7xrzk or Long:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/s...hattoknow.mspx

2. This site: http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/spackins.htm

After your installation of SP2, please perform the following procedure to
install the rest:
1. Verify that your antivirus and firewall are active.
2. Do not visit any websites until you visit the following:
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
3. Custom scan for updates.
4. Install all critical updates.
5. Reboot when an installed update requires it.
6. Repeat steps 2-5 after every reboot, until your scan reveals "No critical
updates at this time"

Let us know how this procedure went, by replying to this post!

Sincerely,

Pat Walters [MSFT]

I would bet the auto update is there but grayed out so you can’t change any
setting. If this is the case you probably don't have administrator rights.
From the control panel click on user accounts and see what kind of privileges
you have. No admin means no changing the update

Hi, I checked, as you suggested, and I do have administrator rights.

The icon is there, but when I select it, it either hangs, or does not open at
all. In the Security Centre is states that "Automatic Updates not yet
configured for this computer". I select "Turn on Automatic Updates" and get
the message "We're sorry. The Security Centre could not change your
Automatic Updates....." Would it have something to do with the installation
of SP2?

Administrator rights is not the same as logging on as the Administrator. Log
off as Gertrude and log back on as Administartor.

Jerry, I have checked again, and I am definitely logged on as the
Adminstrator. I am concerned because of the new updates which I cannot
access at this time.
