SP2 and KB928843 failed

XP x64 SP2 update fails to install. It always fails at the point of file
NTDS.DIT
An error message says 'Access denied'.
I have tried both WU and standalone executable to install. It stops at the
same point every time.
(I thought NTDS.DIT was a Win2K file for Active Directory?? I don't use AD
and never have done! - and it isn't on my system anywhere.)
I reinstalled XP from scratch, and attempted to install SP2 immediately
after install had completed [no other software installed] - still the same
error at the same place.

I then tried to install KB928843, again using both methods - WU and
standalone executable downloaded from MS.
This also fails with a 'Access Denied' message.
The error code for this is 0x80070005.

I gather that SP2 is rather important - so I really, really need to get it
installed.
I've even looked at the WSUS method, but that is way OTT for a home user to
install updates

Any help most appreciated. TIA.

I'm working through the method in
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/873148

- except I'm trying to update Server 2003.

Yup, tried that one.
I've tried the Registry permissions thing.
I've checked file permissions and owners.
I've used the v4 update site.
I've deleted folders - as mentioned in other articles.
I've used a 'sc sdset bits
DA;;CCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRRC;;;SY)(A;;CCDCLCSWRPWPDTLO CRSDRCWDWO;;;BA)(A;;CCLCSWLOCRRC;;;AU)(A;;CCLCSWRP WPDTLOCRRC;;;PU)' command as posted elsewhere.
The end result is the same. Still no joy.

I hope you have better luck than I have.

On mine, it's trying to delete a registry value that doesn't exist in a key
that it created but doesn't seem to have given itself any permisssions for
(HKCU\.ivf). Then the key gets deleted when the computer is restarted, so
now I know there's no point setting the permission before the computer is
restarted and wasting another 45 minutes :-(

This time I created the key and gave Administrators full permission on it
before starting the updater. Fingers crossed...

[time passes]

No.

Perhaps you could try a .bat file that reloads the correct permissions/access
on reboot via a .reg file import or something.

Good luck.
