sp2 & oe6 problem

-Before SP2 installation Outlook Express 6 was ok.
-Since SP2 was installed I lost Outlook Express (ingoing &outgoing mail) -
all kind of error messages
-Uninstallation of SP2 gave me back a working OE6.

Questions:
- possible causes of my problem ?
- is it safe to work without SP2 ?
- any viable solutions ?

Note. I have Windows XP
