I installed Sp2 on three of my computers with no problem
whatsoever. BUT on the forth, NO GO, I did everything
right ,I turned off the firewall, antivirus, cleaned out
temps and such, checked for spyware, viruses, etc. No
Problems were found, I installed Sp2 and it seemed to work
fine ,untill I rebooted and all of sudden an error popped
up and said it recovered my registry from a copy or
backup. I clicked OK. the next time I rebooted it said it
found orphan files and it also deleted and replaced corupt
files .It came back on but some programs wound not work.
Every time I started it it would do the same but to
different files. After the fourth reboot it would reboot
no more. It just had a black screen that said I was
missing a file to start. I went back to my SP1 backup that
I saved with drive image and all was well again. no
problems at all, so it has to be a SP2 problem. I also
tried it from a clean install and it messed up again with
the same problems. Whats going on. SP2 is just eating
itself up.

The first thing I would try would be to download the hard drive
manufacturer's diagnostic utility and make sure the hard drive is ok. With
all of the files being written to do the SP2 install, you may have hit a bad
section on the hard drive. If the drive checks out ok, you'll probably have
to do an "in place" reinstall of XP and reinstall your programs that need
registry entries to work properly. --If the machine will start, you may try
System Restore (Start|Programs|Accessories|System Tools), but no promises.

I checked the hard drive with Maxtor disk check and it
showed ok. I also checked the ram with memtest also ok. I
also tried installing XP from scratch and got the same
problem. Somebody else in this forum is having the same
symptoms also with a dell computer, I wonder if it might
be a procesor incompatibility.

Torgeir Bakken mentioned this article from Michna. Search the page for
Itanium and it should take you to the incompatible processor section.
