SP2 ate my Toshiba laptop

So far I have lost Media Player 9 streaming and Outlook
email. Norton Antivirus and Norton Internet Security no
longer open. My printer driver disappeared. On the laptop
IE says it can't find the server, although two other
nearby desktop computers are able to find it just fine.
At this point I'm thinking I'll have to remove SP2,
reload Media Player and Outlook, remove and reload Norton
products, and reload the printer driver. I'll get IE a
white cane and hope removal of SP2 fixes it's problem.

Why not to try to re-install the faulty programs before
deleting SP2? If your laptop is so badly touched now, I am
afraid that the SP2 removal operation will do more harm
than good. At least try this first. As always recommended,
CREATE a restore point now, before re-installing your
programs. I hope you had another restore point before
installing SP2. If yes, in that case the way back is
easiest (note that in some case System Restore may fail
after installing SP2)

I did try to reinstall the programs. Several times I
tried to reinstall the programs. I would get an error
prompt that some component was missing or that the driver
was not found. Prior to downloading SP2 everything
worked. SP2 was the bull in the china closet. It was
after I downloaded it that everything went south. Perfect
example of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."

You could try reinstalling the missing applications.

Or System Restore to Date/Time before issue began:
Start/All Programs/Accessories/system Tools/System Restore

Once Windows is working correctly, verify with the laptop manufacturer
that there are no installation issues with SP-2.
Then follow the Service Pack Installation Checklist:

Although there are numbers of posts here showing SP2
issues, some others installed without any. In my case I
created a HDD image before installing SP2 just in case. I
had problems with WU V5 over a week, just to find out that
the reason was a program distorting IE.
I think Microsoft must review its BETA program since it
appears that many issues (both software & hardware) were
not previewed before releasing the final version of SP2
but, knowing how things are, users should be more
proactive and prepare their own contingency plans before
anything else. If you tried everything so far, just
uninstall SP2 and see if you revert your programs back,
what I do not believe will happen. Else you might need to
re-install from scratch. Sorry for that.

Most of us are recommending that those with laptops, especially older ones,
contact the manufacturer for info on upgrading to SP2. I would not upgrade
until I got an "all clear" from the manufacturer as well as download links
for any model-specific drivers which SP2 would require.

We similarly discourage laptop owners from formatting and installing a
retail version of Windows until they have the necessary, laptop-specific
files and drivers on hand which will be needed.
