XP SP2 automatic updates is enabled and does not work. I am not running any
kind of proxy. I can see the updates at the windows update site... but
apparently auto update does not.

Thanks.. any help would be appreciated.

After hours spent looking at posts/forums and "BITS" services and web active x controls and deciphering cryptic error messages about "forced sceduled timing errors" (unsuccessfully) and generally pulling my hair out and getting no where. To make matters worse I had a second PC that was working and nothing seemed different between the two. As a last ditch experimennt, I disabled updates so xp threw a wobbly....then re-booted....then went to update site and "set windows to update automatically with a default install time of 0300". On a re-boot, the pc immediately downloaded the updates and installed them. I think when sp2 installed it must have got confused (a bit like its operator ) somewhere down the line. Hope this may solve someones problems. As has been said on other posts, the time you set for automatic install is not related to

the actual time of the download.......hope this is of some use........%$^^&% computers!!!!

thats ok . for the moment "ok" whatever time it says. This is the time that
your pc will "install" whatever it has previously downloaded. If you get
it working you can change it to a more conveniant time when your pc will be
"on". 0300 is 3am. If your problem is the same as mine...enabling "updates"
from the web-site will clear out any corruption the pc has in its own
settings......well, it worked for me anyway...good luck!
