I have transferred this post from SBS forum (just discovered this one)

Win SBS 2003 R2 SP2
Win Vista Ultimate clients
Win XP PRO SP3 clients

Issue:

1. WSUS SP1 was running just fine on SBS
2. I installed SP2 upgrade as presented in WSUS updates list:
a. G:\WSUS data base location
b. Have 5 clients on network, 2 registered and 3 said not reporting
c. Un-install & re-install SP2, database options to SQLServer
d. Using WSUS 3.0 SP2 Step-by-step guide, change GPO Specify intranet
site to SBSServer:8530 for common clients
e. Same client status
3. I un-installed sp2, remove all
4. Install WSUS 3.0 SP1, Database options to SQLServer (part of SBS
configuration)
5. Ran SBS BPA, all green
6. WSUS SP1 status:
a. ran wuauclt.exe /detectnow on Vista client
b.ran wuauclt.exe /detectnow on WinXP client
c. no computers listed in WSUS
d: Connection; Local/SSL, 8530, Administrator, Ver 3.1.6001.65
e. Synchronization Status; last 9/22/2009, succeeded
f. Server Statistics:
unapproved 20539
Approved 7
Declined 103
Computers 0
Computer Groups 5
g. GPO Specifies intranet site to SBSServer:8530 for common clients,
http:\\SBSServer for server GPO
7. Ran IE8 Windows update on Vista:
a. identified 2 updates
b. approved install
c. update failed with error 80070643
8. Ran IE8 Windows Update on SNS server:
a. indentified updates including WSUS SP1 update
b. Approved install
c Updates applied

I cannot re-run IE8 Windows Update on server because there are no updates
available to test 2nd time update.

All clients, WinXP & Vista fail if I use the IE8 manual windows update
process. No updates are shown via WSUS because all client PCs did not
register and report in. I did re-boot each client after the re-install of
SP1.

No server side screen message.
Client side IE8 windows update has failed screen pointing to error 80070643
All other SBS services are running just fine, only WSUS is not working.

Application Logs:
Application log posted that no client computers have ever contacted the
server starting 9/21
WSUS admin console was unable to conect to the WSUS Server via the remote
API. HTTP request failed 403 on 9/9
Multiple WSUS working correctly starting on 9/10

I have been pulling my hair out since the first posting on 8/28. Any help
greatly appreciated.

From this forum, I discovered diagnostic tool, Ran on client (Vista) and
receied following red flag:

VerifyWUServerURL<> failed with hr=0x80072eef
The URL is invalid

I checked GPO on SBS for copmmon client intrnet site and it is
http:\\sbsserver:8530

WHat do I do now?

I looked at GPO - common and the setup placed the URL as
http:\\sbsserver:8520

The example showed http://IntranetUpd01

I reversed the \\ to // and the computers appeared. I nned them to cycle and
report in.

If this works, I will advise and close this post.

Post the whole unedited output from the client diag. 90% of the edited ones turn
out to have the error corrected in the edited version because the op types what
should be there and not what is actually there.

Is it really

http:\\

and not

http://

? If so, that's the problem; the URL is indeed invalid.

Harry.

The switching of the / from \\ to // fixed thr problem. Is it safe to move
to SP2?
