SP2 blocks IE, can I work without it?

I installed Service Pack 2 a few days ago (I have Windows XP) and everything
seemed fine, when last night, out of the blue, IE stopped working - meaning,
it wouldn't display ANYTHING, every single site that I tried to log to, it
immidiately showed "The page cannot be displayed".
Other browsers and such seemed to work fine nevertheless.

I removed the SP and IE worked again!

I thought it was simply a coincidence, so I re-installed SP2, and IE stopped
working again.

What do I do? Why does it keep blocking it?
It worked fine for a couple of days, so I didn't think it had anything to do
with it...

I tried making IE an "exception" for the Firewall but nothing changed... my
question is, IS SERVICE PACK 2 THAT IMPORTANT OR CAN I GO ON AND LIVE SAFELY
WITHOUT IT?

Hopefully you can help. Thanks a bunch in advance.
