I have at least 3 different microsoft disks. 1 cd 2 dvd, that have the SP2
installation files on them. None of them extract without an error explaining
that there is a corrupt file. They seldom stop on the same file.

I have successfully installed the service packs on this same computer and
have not made any changes to the hardware configuration (I did replace the
hard drive, but i did succeed in installing the service pack on the new
drive, but as a duel boot.

I have tried downloading the installation file 2 or 3 times.

I have tried automatic updates. 3 times...to the end that the installation
faild in the middle, three times. The first I was unable to get to the
recovery console. The second the asr process left me with a mess. The third
(on a reformated partition, clean installation, updated to the point that it
was ready little software or periferals. I was able to do a system restore.

I have tried in safe mode.

Again 3 different disks, read on two different drives reading to diskes that
have been run through dskcheck on a clean install will not extract completly
and say that the files are corrupt.....including fresh
downloads.......??????? On a system that has successfully received the
upgrade in the past.

I have looked at the other posts, and followed the links , looked at and
followed the checklists given and am at a loss as to what to do next.....live
without the upgrade?

I guess thats a possibility.

But i have grown to like it and would like to figure out a way through this..

any suggestions?

My guess is a memory problem.
Reseat memory sticks.
If you have multiple memory sticks, remove one making sure to stay at or
above Windows XP 64mb minimum.
Then remove a different stick putting original back in.

I though about the same thing and ran the micrsoft ram check utility and the
ram came up good, I also have loaded a lot of software with no problems.

Today I got up and discovered that my clock time was off by about 2 years on
the last attempt. A late nite (early morning) oversite. As I had not yet
activated the os I could not log back on (the usb modem doesn't load untill
after the log on) to complete the activation so I deleted the partition and
started over.

Success, I loaded the xp pro sp1 and followed it with the sp2 without even
getting all the drivers in first. It worked and everything went smooth after
that.

Could it be that the system was comparing times and dates etc and could not
validate the files?

Anyway, thanks for your help.
