That happened to me and the only thing I could do was go into safe mode and
uninstall it . Check your virus protection to make sure it is working after
you uninstall mine wasen't and if your computer has a firewall on it make
sure you get it back on after you uninstall.

My laptop is doing the same thing after finishing downloading the window
service pack XP2 and it it only showing me my wallpaper and nothing else. I
would try to check my virus protection but there is no possible way as there
is no icons, start menu, quick launch button or anything anywhere!!! WHAT DO
I DO?!!

1.) If you press "Ctrl" + "Alt" + "Delete" the taskbar manager comes up.
2.) Then click "File" on the menu, then click on "New Task (Run...)."
3.) Once the box appears, type in "regedit" (without the " ").
4.) Click the "+" sign next to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE"
5.) Then click the "+" sign next to "SOFTWARE"
6.) Then click the "+" sign next to "Microsoft"
7.) Then click the "+" sign next to "Windows NT"
8.) Then click on the word "Winlogon"
9.) At the list to the right, scroll down and find "Shell"
10.) Right click "Shell" and click "modify"
11.) If "C:\WINDOWS\System32\System32.exe" is in the box, delete it and
replace it with "Explorer.exe" then click close.
12.) Then reboot.

This should fix your problem.

This is my exact problem, yet my registry key already had it as Explorer.exe.

A Selective Startup using msconfig with everything besides System Services
checked starts fine,, explorer and all, so now I know that the issue is not
with explorer.exe itself, but a process screwing up explorer.

If anyone has any ideas besides reinstalling SP2..? Since this is my 10th try.

Finally, I've found a resolution, 2 months after first installing:

- Install SP2 as usual up until it reboots and you are left with no desktop
and only a background
- CTRL+ALT+DEL>New Task >"regedit">
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\RpcSs>
Set ObjectName's value to "LocalSystem"

I discovered this in a support article about uninstalling SP2, it's at the
bottom.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;[LN];875350

Hopefully this will help the dozens of other users that have visited the
newsgroups having the same problem.
