SP2 Causes PC Games To Crash. Why??

Before downloading SP2 onto my 'puter, I played PC games with no problem.
Afterwards, there's 2 games that won't work. One won't even install, citing a
DirectX 7 conflict, the other installs perfectly but crashes seconds after
starting. Tried uninstalling/re-installing, tried a couple of fixes from the
Eidos message boards, no luck. Any idea how to run programs in a "pre-SP2"
mode? Maybe that might work. Issue began after SP2 dowload. Any advice out
there??

Direct X 7? That is quite old.
Make sure you have the latest version, Direct X 9.0C:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/default.aspx

Check with the game manufacturers for updates/patches as well as
compatibility with SP-2.
Make sure you have the latest drivers, especially video.
