SP2 CD Install hangs at Registry Backup

While trying to install SP2, it starts the installation
but hangs or freezes when it starts to Backup Registry
Files. I turned off McAfee Firewall and Virus Scan and
exited SBC Yahoo DSL Gateway 2 trying to shut down its
firewall. Does anyone have a workaround?

Some log files you can check for any clues or error messages:

%windir%\WindowsUpdate.log
%windir%\Svcpack.log
%windir%\setupapi.log

(%windir% is typically C:\Windows)


This one might be relevant:

Updates from the Windows Update Web site are not installed and an
"Error 0x80070005: Access is denied" error message is logged to the
Windows Update.log file

and as you are updating from the SP2 CD,
C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log isn't a relevant file to look
in, but this two are:

%windir%\Svcpack.log
%windir%\setupapi.log

(%windir% is typically C:\Windows)

I have the same problem. I can not find any error in the logs. The system
just hangs while attempting the backup of the registry. I have even gone so
far as to reset all the permissions to the defaults. It took two days to get
all my applications to work again. Very frustrating.
