With the number of people on here who have had a problem trying to install
SP2 with no luck you would think Microsoft would post something!
Everyone I talk to have the same exact problem!

Maybe they should call it SP3?

SP2 is a solid, secure release. It is a major "Critical Update"
for Windows XP and updates about 5 million lines of code,
enabling much stronger security, stability, and affords a tad better
performance benefit.

Carey,
I am sure all the people here are sure SP2 is a "Critical Update", but we
here can't seem to download or install it due to changes in V5 procedures.
Please don't tell us how good it may be, tell us how to get it.
Respectfully
Don

Don;
There is not much you can be told since you did not post anything
specific about your problem.
EXACTLY what happens?
Is there an error message?
What is the error message?

Rob;
There is a great deal posted by Microsoft and others.
Some is referenced here:
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/xpsp2.htm

You say "Everyone I talk to have the same exact problem!"
Since it is the "exact problem", if you post the specifics such as
EXACTLY what happens along with exact error message, perhaps someone
here can give you an appropriate fix.

Better yet, continue talking to those same people and find out what
your computers have in common.
Since you all have "the same exact problem", it is very likely you
have the same cause.
This is common with friends who play the same games or share files.

Perhaps something here can help:

Jupiter,
I have 22 failed downloads with error code 80072EFD.
I am in a home network
Server is running NT 4.0 sp5
Proxy software is 602Pro
5 client machines running xp sp1
1 client machine running Win 98
All client machines have all patches/security fixes applied that were
available as of 8/18/2004.
V4 worked flawlessly.
I enabled automatic updates on all machines as recommended by Microsoft on
8/06/2004.

8/19/2004 the first machine got the automatic update with the signature from
a "Microsoft Provider" to send me to the V5 webpage.

I can go to the V5 page,
Click on either option of express or custom,
It scans for updates,
I click on the install button,
The EULA pops up,
I click accept,
2-3 seconds later it tells me "Windows XP Service Pack 2" failed.

I can send you the "windows update.log" (V4) and
the "windowsupdate.log" (V5)

I have read most of the postings here and added to trusted sites, tweaked
this setting, tweaked that setting, booted rebooted, reregistered dll's etc.

All I know at this point is V4 worked and V5 has had some change that
apparently some machines don't like.

I can download the 266 meg file mentioned but that won't fix my problem with
any new downloads from V5.windowsupdate.com

Thanks

You are right, and I'm sure they are working on it. I'm here looking for
break-throughs myself.

There is already a great deal from Microsoft and others.

Carey
I do not think Don was asking exactly "where to get it" but how on earth to
get it if it won't download or won't install or whatever the case may be.
I think just about everyone by now knows where to get it but the problem
with many is: it's just not working.
It worked for me but I know many who is isn't working for.
