SP2 crashes Control Panel

I downloaded SP2 and had a problem while downloading (It was the automatic
Windows Update). When it installed, I found that the .net framework had not
installed. I found also that there is a problem with Control Panel. When I
click on an option to access the printer/fax setup in category view, the
control panel crashes--just shuts down. Also, sometimes it shuts down if I
use the back arrow. Later I was able to download the .net framework when I
discovered that it was my web accelerator with its proxy settings that was
preventing the download of .net framework. I logged on without it, and was
able to download and install .net framework. It seems a bit quicker to boot
up now, but still I have it crash on the Control Panel. I can access the
options with category view. Occassionally there is a message about an
inability to read a referenced memory but this is only occasionally.
Sometimes the desktop goes blank and reloads. And sometimes I loose my
desktop picture and it tells me that I have lost my active desktop. What
should I do? Does anyone have any ideas? I contacted Microsoft's download
support, but have not received the promised e-mail. I am considering a system
roll back. I am using Windows XP. But would I have a similar problem if I
tried to reinstall it? It is a very long download on a dial up connection!

What kind of processor do you have?
See if disabling DEP can change your symptom.

http://support.microsoft.com/default...t=windowsxpsp2

Also, in case it matters, do you know if the problem is due only to
that method of accessing that folder or is it actually displaying that
folder which is the problem? You can find other methods of opening
the Printers and Faxes special folder (e.g. via Help) which could
help you refine your problem description.

Good luck

I have a Pentium 4 2.40 GHz Dell 8200 machine. I still need help. It says my
computer cannot use hardware-based DEP but can use software based DEP. It
does not give me an option to disable DEP. It checks DEP for Windows for
essential Windows Programs and services only, or turn on DEP for all programs
except those I select. How do I disable it completely to see if it is the
problem? I can get into the printer/fax folder in category view, just not the
Windows XP classic view. I also seem to see a slowing of the computer while
loading, and a few quirks is I click the back button in Control Panel after
progressing to other folders. I don't know if you understand exactly what I
mean. It is a bit hard to explain. It does occssionally give a memory
error--something about not being able to read a referenced memory or
something, I think it is. I did not write it down. This happens when it
crashes.....

I did some more checking, and in category view I can access printers with the
icon view, but not the tile view. And I see frequent errors in printui.dll as
well on some of the troubleshooting programs.

Don't worry about it. DEP was just a guess based on your initial details.
It appears increasingly to be a factor in crashes in explorer.exe

The next thing that I would try then would be an IE Repair.
You could use the new /rereg switch. However, there is
additional repair done by KB831429 so I would try both.
It is unclear how careful we should be about trying to close
the active users of these modules before re-registering them.
However, since the old IE Repair (KB194177) actually
occured in the middle of a reboot I would try to stop unnecessary
tasks as much as possible first. E.g. stop explorer.exe
and use cmd.exe to issue the commands from, etc.

You can use tasklist /fi "Modules eq ..."
to check on which tasks are still using which modules.
