After downloading SP2 I can not download any files or programs like PalTalk.
The process gets stuck half way and I get a message saying windows has
encountered a problem and has to shutdown.Got a message that I needed more
memory so I aded another card with 256MB 9 no help there). I been to diferent
sites trying to find a solution, but I'm not getting anywere. I rebooted,
reinstalled, restaured to ealyer point, tryed to remove SP2. Is my PC dead?

No. There are steps you need to consider before downloading and installing
SP 2. The Windows Update website has a ton of information about this.
Check it out and follow the advice and instructions given there.

This is why my mom does not have a PC running Windows.
There is too much maintenance to make it worth her while.

There is no requirement to install SP2. Just as there are specific steps
that must be taken when updating the operating system used on Macs, there
are specific steps that must be taken when updating the Windows operating
system. When someone purchases an Apple product they get to have the
distinction of owning a system that makes up about 5% of the personal
computer market. They also get to spend about 25% more for less
compatibility, less available applications and less than ubiquitous service
and support. When Apple can start selling machines with the Windows
operating system installed they may be on to something. Until then I will
continue to use a computer with the Windows operating system installed.

My (88 year old) mom (in a different city) has a MailStation
for e-mail which is no problem (except for EarthLink's crazy
billing department); but wants to be able to receive HTML
messages and browse the Internet. However, presently
it takes a lot more knowledge and research to maintain
a PC than it does to use one. It would be nice if one could
buy a $50/year in-home maintenance contract that would
handle hardware *and* software maintenance. Perhaps
the software maintenance could even be done by a
telecommute.

Their customer support gave me a better URL:
www.msntv2.com which got redirected to
www.msntv.com/pc.
I gather that it is $200 for the box and wireless keyboard,
etc. and $22/month for the dialup subscription. Also see
http://msntv.com/pc/support/msn_faq_getting.asp
They apparently maintain user files on their servers.
They maintain the local software from the server
automatically and do not allow local installation of SW.
They support many printers and flash storage devices
such as digital camera memory and thumb-memory
via two USB connectors.

WebTV is ideal for the person who is not computer literate
and still wants to surf the web, get pictures of the
grand-kids, do email and have all the software updates done
of site. I have a friend who had a earlier version of WebTV
that he still keeps working because that way he can email me
a question when his cable connection is down or he has a
problem with his PC.

She'll want to print pictures, so get her an inkjet printer
that will do photos well. Be sure to look at the cost of
ink. She might even want a multi-function printer/scanner
if one is compatible with WebTV.

But it does avoid the update, anti-virus, issues that make
PCs either fun or hair-pullers.
