SP2 disk install failure

Hello!
My husband absolutely refused to read any info before installing SP2 and now
we have a minor disaster on our hands!
I'm running a fairly new computer, XP home.
We got the disk for SP2 (for free at Best Buy, by the way!), and he popped
it right in. We got as far as "Running process after installation" and then
it froze. We let it run 2 hours and it never went any further. He did
Ctrl/Alt/Del and closed the install program.
Under the System info, my computer still thinks it's running SP1. SP2 is
listed in Add/Remove Programs.
What to do now? Remove SP2 (not sure how much is actually there, since it
stopped mid-load) using Add/Delete and restart computer and then reinstall
from the disk? Will my computer restart or will it be confused and not know
if it's SP1 or SP2 and not reboot at all?! Arrgh!
Thanks for any help!

Anita

Thanks for your quick reply TaurArian! I appreciate the links - I'd found
one of them, but not all, and one never knows if they are legitimate!

Any chance I could get you, and other posters, to reply to this part of my
post?

By giving me the info on removing SP2, are you suggesting that route, or was
it simply good info for me to have? Thanks again!

How to remove Windows XP Service Pack 2 from your computer
This is legitimate (it's a Microsoft Knowledgebase article).
You have more than one option, remove via Add/Remove, System Restore, Recovery
Console.
I would try Add/Remove first, if not system restore, otherwise you would be looking
at the Recovery Console option.

As SP2 is not installed properly, you will have to remove it.

The other links - information of what to do prior to installing SP2. Read the
articles, research and when appropriate then reinstall SP2.
