SP2 downloaded itself and partially installed

Stats:
Sony VAIO PCG-FXA36 laptop
256 RAM, 1 GB AMD Athlon processor
20 GB HD partitioned C: 7.79GB [FAT32] - D: 10.8CG [NTFS]
XP Home Version
All critical updates until SP2
Trend Micro Internet Security - Program Version 11.40 [firewall enabled]
All Trend Updates current
Latest version of Spybot S&D

Since my C drive only had 1.7GB available [cleaned out all non essential
items] and the SP2 download/install required 1.8GB, I've been avoiding
installing SP2. I finally decided to order the CD, so accessed the update
website, clicked on the link to order the CD. Seemed simple enough.
Later, maybe 1/2 hr or so, I noticed my PC was slow and the HD was writing
like crazy. Task Manager indicated CPU was spiking 50 to 100%. Update.exe was
running. I had no idea how to stop it or what was being updated. When I was
on MS update screen I had not request SP2 to download and I never saw a
screen appear to ask if I was ready to install anything. I finally got tired
of trying to figure out what was going on and shut down. PC started the next
AM, and started the high CPU usage again, then finally settled down. I ran
Spybot S&D and Trend anti-virus to make sure I didn't have some weird virus.
Defraged both C & D drives. Made backup copies of all important files.

So this is my current status. By some miracle, I am not having any problems,
yet.
But I know that I have a "partially installed SP2".
When I click on the Start button, then Run, and type winver, and click OK,
this is the response: "Build 2600.xpsp2.030422-1633 : Service Pack 1"

"Add or Remove Programs" lists 15 items of "Windows XP Hotfix (SP2)'s".
Last 2 lines of "svcpack.log":
309.505: Service Pack 2 installation did not complete.
309.505: Update.exe extended error code = 0xf201

Is there an easy fix to this situation?
Will system restore correct partially installed SP2?
If I do nothing and wait for the CD to arrive, will the install pickup where
it stopped?
I had 1.7GB of free space on C, now I'm down to 1.2GB.... not even enough to
install SP2 with the CD [1.6GB required]

Frankie,

First, enable hidden files and folders via Folder Options in the
Control Panel. Click the View tab, put a mark next to " Show hidden
files and folders ". REMOVE the marks next to " Hide extentsions for
known file types " and " Hide protected operating system files ".
Click Apply, OK.
Navigate to C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download . Look for the
most recent folder. You can click View, Arrange icons by - Modified
to find it. This *should* contain the setup files for SP2. Delete
this folder and wait for the CD to arrive.

Take a look here for steps you should take to prepare the system for
SP2 :

The updates you see in Add/Remove Programs that say SP2 indicate
that they are now included in SP2. It does not indicate that SP2 is
installed. [Build 2600.xpsp2.030422-1633 : Service Pack 1] shows
that SP1 is installed, not SP2.

Hi MowGreen,
I found C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download.
Most recent folder is: \9ded4ee34a35fced0033d3e152a36e0e [379MB]

I have not removed this folder YET..... my main concern....
The 15 lines of "Windows XP Hotfix (SP2)" followed by their Q number
in Add or Remove Programs.

If I go back to restore point prior to SP2 downloading, will the 15 lines
in Add or Remove Programs disappear? Would it be better to do that 1st
then delete the folder at: C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download?

I hate to be a sissy about this, but I have majorly messed up my PC in
the past and don't want to start from scratch.

Frankie;
Those hotfixes are not part of SP-2.
They were installed before you attempted to install SP-2.
The SP2 means those updates will be incorporated in SP-2 once SP-2 is
installed.
It sounds like SP-2 is downloaded but not installed.
