Tonight, I tried with success to download SP2 - with no problems. I didnt do
anything different and I didnt have to remove KB842773 first. I think you
were right - there must have been something up at the MS end, after all I did
nothing different so someone else must have. As an aside I took your advice
and contacted MS with the issue - I post their reply below for your info. In
the end though, I didnt have to do anything.
Thanks for your help - my advice to others is to keep trying.

MS REPLY WAS : Based on my knowledge, the error code means "network
connection is not available". I recommend you manually download the full SP2
Installation Package by clicking the link below:
Windows XP Service Pack
http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...35-SP2-ENU.exe
Note: It is the same as the one you downloaded via Automatic Update.
Before starting the download process, please temporarily disable the
Automatic Update feature to stop the current download thread:
1. Click Start, click Run, enter "SYSDM.CPL" (without quotation marks) and
then press Enter.
2. On the Automatic Updates tab, select the option "Turn off Automatic
Updates", and then click OK.
When Windows XP Service Pack 2 is successfully downloaded and installed,
please turn on the Automatic Update feature again
