I found that I was having problems downloading the upgrade to SP2, with the
error code: 80246005.

Here's what to do....

Find the update KB842773 (in Add/Remove Programs)

Remove it.

Go back to Windows Update.

It will now force you to re-download this update (KB842773)

After downloading it again, go back to Windows Update.

It will now allow you to download SP2 with no error message.

Good luck folks.

David

This solved my problem. But I had to remove KB842773 prior to the
reinstallation (not just download it and reinstall).

Many thanks

Nick

I was happy to see that someone had made progress on this error. But when I
tried your solution it did not work. I was able to uninstall thr KB842773
but then the update process will not re-install. I am now in a loop because
it continues to go to this update page -- for KB842773, but it continues to
fail to install.

Any ideas?

Help. Now KB842773 and XP Service Pack 2 fail.........

I am afraid that this fix didnt work for me either. After removing KB842773
update will not re-install it and gives the dreaded 80246005 as the fault
code - exactly the same as countryboy. I have restored my setup and await a
way ahead.

Hi,

It sounds to me like there is a problem with the update process in general,
which is obviously at Microsoft's end. The post above yours says that this
method did work for them so all I can suggest is to call up Microsoft and ask
them what the problem is. I had to call them some months ago and did find
them to go out of their way to help. Let me know what happens.

Cheers, Dave

Tonight, I tried with success to download SP2 - with no problems. I didnt do
anything different and I didnt have to remove KB842773 first. I think you
were right - there must have been something up at the MS end, after all I did
nothing different so someone else must have. As an aside I took your advice
and contacted MS with the issue - I post their reply below for your info. In
the end though, I didnt have to do anything.

Thanks for your help - my advice to others is to keep trying.

IC

MS REPLY WAS : Based on my knowledge, the error code means "network
connection is not available". I recommend you manually download the full SP2
Installation Package by clicking the link below:

Windows XP Service Pack
http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...35-SP2-ENU.exe

Note: It is the same as the one you downloaded via Automatic Update.

Before starting the download process, please temporarily disable the
Automatic Update feature to stop the current download thread:

1. Click Start, click Run, enter "SYSDM.CPL" (without quotation marks) and
then press Enter.
2. On the Automatic Updates tab, select the option "Turn off Automatic
Updates", and then click OK.

When Windows XP Service Pack 2 is successfully downloaded and installed,
please turn on the Automatic Update feature again

Everyone,

I found a note on the following site that indicates that Microsoft is
managing the upgrades by limiting connections each day...so the system and
general user community does the upgrade over time, and not all at once.

The link http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/xpsp2.htm provides some useful
information on how to upgrade to ensure no problems.

Good Luck to everyone. I have not been able to upgrade yet....but I
believe the issue is on MS side of things.

Regards,
CountryBoy
