I had the same problem the other day when I had to replace the hard drive on
my laptop. I tried twice, but it wouldn't install, and after I clicked to
remove the install, I still had problems until I went to the control panel
and went to the add/remove and removed the SP2 from there (if it's there). I
talked to a friend and he told me to stop any anti-virus or anti-spyware
program before trying again, which I did on 3/31/07. I did as he said, but I
got a pop-up about my Zone Alarm's Vector Monitor being stopped and it asked
me if I wanted to re-instal it or something like that. Apparently, my friend
forgot to tell me to turn off my firewall as well. Since SP2 has a firewall,
it will try and install that instead of your present firewall, if you have
one. I clicked to cancel the firewall and the install went thru, but there
were a number of 'run time' errors, but I just clicked on OK. After SP2 is
installed, you can either use the firewall that comes with it or as in my
case, I chose to use Zone Alarm as I like to see the in/out traffic.
When you reconnect to the internet and if you have auto-install for your
updates, some updates will not install and if you check your update history
at update.microsoft.com you can see which ones they are. I see in mine that
one of them is for updates for IE6, but, since I don't have IE6, I believe
Ican delete it from the list of updates. The other updates are for Windows XP
and I'm trying to find if they weren't installed because I have now upgraded
to XP2.
