....and the hardware? - if you're neglecting hardware updates, then you could
be in just as much doo-doo.!

Stephen;
If you really mean "unless you know the exact answer please dont reply
to this" stop reading now.
You have not even come close to giving the information needed to give
an exact answer.
Exact details of all hardware.
Exact details of all software patches including dates of each install.
All hardware and software updates including versions, dates installed
etc.
The list goes on...
If you want an exactanswer, you need to take the computer to a
qualified tech to get SP-2 installed.

Verify SP-2 compatibility with all your hardware and software.
Follow the Service Pack Installation Checklist:

Like i said before all of my stuff is up to date, software, hardware etc. i
just didnt want to get into the full details of it all. Every single piece of
hardware is new (pc is 1 year HP Pavillion T250), have stopped NAV and
Firealls when doing updates etc. Have installed all updates from HP's site as
well as Micrsoft updates. Bios is up to date etc. SP2 was supposed to be
idiot proof yet now your saying i should bring it to a Tech expert. I may not
be a genius but i can assure you i do know my stuff with pc's, hardware and
software. I only want an answer about why i am getting this problem, so far i
have only seen one other mention of it on a different site, in that case
Micrsoft recommend doing the install fromSafe mode! Not exactly the way i
want to do things. i'd rather see a proper fix for it, or at least an
explanation as to what the problem actually is. Why cant Mocrsoft explain
this?

Stephen;
The proper fix can be difficult to determine without some research as
well as possibly some trial and error.

SP-2 is not and was not intended to be "idiot proof", however SP-2
does successfully install on most computers.
Consider the number of Windows XP computers in the world.
Now also consider that no two are identical.
Even with the extensive testing of SP-2, there is no way anyone
including Microsoft could have tested for all possibilities.

Did you check your hardware and software manufacturers for SP-2
compatibility?
Did you follow the checklist in my last post?

Otherwise temporarily swap hard drives if a spare is available.
Perform a Clean Install of Windows XP.
Install the same hardware drivers.
Then install SP-2.
If SP-2 installs, you know you have some sort of software conflict.
If not, you most likely have a hardware issue.

"Stephen,"

I am sorry you are running into this issue. I would like
to help. Could you post back to this thread the last 15
or 20 lines from your Windows Update log found at "%windir%
\Windows Update.log"

Could you also tell us if you received a numeric error of
any kind?

Sincerely,

Pat Walters [MSFT]

Hi All

Sorry didnt get back sooner but only tackled install issue again the other
day. In the end i managed to install it, i had to turn off just about every
process running on the pc bar the nessecary ones. Didnt enjoy that. I havent
had the chance to test all of my programs with it yet but have noticed
compatibility issues with Nero 6.0.0.15 so that looks like the first update
needed! As to the question re: error codes, nope none, just sat there trying
to restart processes....

Thanks all
Stephen
