SP2 Firewall question

Several days ago, I downloaded SP2 from the MS download center
at
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
and during the installation, Security Center noticed that I
had NAV/NIS 2003, but said it couldn't communicate with it.
This doesn't bother me, since I monitor it myself, however at
the end of the install Security Center shows that "one" of my
firewall's is turned on and since I can see Norton Internet
Security in the task bar I thought it was referring to that,
plus I followed the instructions for turning SP2 firewall off
thru Local Area Connections>Advanced Tab>Settings>Turn
firewall Off.

Today I went into MSCONFIG for another
reason, and in "Services" I see that Windows Firewall is
running, even though I turned it off. My question is, do I
have to uncheck Windows firewall... in "Services" msconfig, to
actually turn it off?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Pam

Serenity: No, I'm not doing anything in "services" I just
noticed that Windows Firewall is running and wondered if it
should be since I have already turned it off.

| Are you un checking things in "services" in msconfig?
| If so your not supposed to do that.
| Only un check things in msconfig in "start up" not in
services
| Instead go to Services within Admin. Tools and "disable"
services

Serenity: I was actually turning something off in the
"Startup" tab, but when I went to msconfig it opened with the
"Services" tab displaying. While it was displayed I noticed
that Windows Firewall was running, and I thought that was odd,
since I had already turned it off via the way mentioned in my
first post and below. So it occurred to me that I might have
to turn Windows Firewall off, the way you suggested, thru
Admin Tools, but I wasn't sure if I should, hence the mention
of unchecking the Windows Firewall option in msconfig
"Services", I guess my explanation was confusing since I
didn't mention 'how' I would actually uncheck the firewall
feature.

What I really want to know is the Windows Firewall on or off?
Which of the two settings actually controls the feature
(on/off) is it services in msconfig, or turning it off the way
I originally did thru "Local Area Connections
Properties>Advanced tab>Settings>Choose option to turn
firewall Off. With the Firewall running in "services" doesn't
that mean exactly that, that it is running, or am I wrong?

Below (8-23-04/10:06 P.M. Pacific time) there is a post about
Auto Update, and one of the options for turning it off after
it has "already" been turned off is unchecking it in
"Services" See Maurice N~MVP re: Auto-update fully off. Still
updating? After reading this post, I wondered if the Windows
firewall was actually turned off the way I did it. I want to
use my existing firewall, and thought that running 2 firewalls
was not a good idea, because they would conflict in someway,
so I want to make sure that Windows firewall is actually off.

Thanks,

Pam

Pam,
Go to Control Panel, then the Security Center Icon and down at the bottom find
Windows Firewall, click on it and you should get the option to turn it on or
off.

Serenity: Thanks for the info... I have been trying to find
out what the image name is for the Windows firewall in "task
manager" but couldn't find the answer anywhere. When I opened
task manager, alg.exe "is" running, so what is strange is why
is it running if I turned it off the way Microsoft recommends,
and in doing it that way it tells me that the Windows Firewall
is OFF (thru Local Area Connections Properties Dialog box)?

Don't get me wrong, I have NO complaints with SP2 otherwise,
all my programs are running normally without incidence, but I
don't like being lulled into believing a program is off if it
isn't, and if I would continue to let it run (alg.exe) will it
indeed cause a problem since Norton is running as well? I've
been able to avoid viruses, worms etc. by keeping my computer
up to date (firewall, antivirus, windows update, adaware and
spybot), so I don't want any problems now.

Thanks again,

Pam

P.S. Why do your post's show an attachment? I don't open
these and have always wondered why someone would include them
in a newsgroup post.

"Serenity" <> wrote in message

check your task manager
right click in toolbar and choose "task manager" now choose
"processes" and look for alg.exe (that's the firewall running)
Also I believed if you have it checked marked and NOT disabled
in services through Adm. Tools then it's on.
Good Luck to you

Jack Mac: I've had the SP2 Windows firewall turned 'off' that
way since I install it, you can read this in my first post or
some of the later explaining this. My problem, is that
although "security center" and my "local area connection
properties" dialog box say's the Win Firewall is Off, it is
running in "task manager" and "msconfig" services (tab). I'm
running Norton and I don't want to run Windows as well. My
original question was why would security center say it's off
and "task manager" and "msconfig" say's it's ON and 'should' I
turn it off in those places as well. I was under the
impression you shouldn't run 2 firewalls at the same time, and
wanted to know if I need to turn this process off in task
manager and msconfig for it to be "actually" off. If you
think so let me know, I don't want any thing conflicting with
my Norton firewall.

Thanks,

Pam

How'd all this top posting get started? Oh well,
You are right, when I look at the services tab (in msconfig) it does
show the Windows firewall "running" even though it is turned off
in the Security Center. I know the Windows firewall is off because
I have a program that requires three ports ..... two outgoing and
one incoming.... and it works as it should. But if I go to the
Security Center and turn on the Windows firewall, the program
ceases to work. I use Zone Alarm Pro as my firewall and I have
opened the three ports there.
Could it be that even though the services tab shows "running"
means that it is running and available to be turned on or off?
Sounds kinda far-fetched to me but then, it's still Microsoft!

| How'd all this top posting get started? Oh well,
| You are right, when I look at the services tab (in msconfig)
it does
| show the Windows firewall "running" even though it is turned
off
| in the Security Center. I know the Windows firewall is off
because
| I have a program that requires three ports ..... two
outgoing and
| one incoming.... and it works as it should. But if I go to
the
| Security Center and turn on the Windows firewall, the
program
| ceases to work. I use Zone Alarm Pro as my firewall and I
have
| opened the three ports there.
| Could it be that even though the services tab shows
"running"
| means that it is running and available to be turned on or
off?
| Sounds kinda far-fetched to me but then, it's still
Microsoft!

Jack Mac: Not so far-fetched! When you disable Windows
Firewall in "services.msc" and then try to access the firewall
again in security center or thru my local area connection
properties box, you get a dialog box that say's something to
the effect "that the program has been stopped..." and you can
no longer use the on/off feature for the firewall because it's
blocked by the notification. When you then reinable it again
in (services.msc), the on/off feature is available, plus
Norton tells me alg.exe is accessing the Internet even though
it's still turned off thru sec. center.

Thanks,

Pam
