Serenity: Thanks for the info... I have been trying to find
out what the image name is for the Windows firewall in "task
manager" but couldn't find the answer anywhere. When I opened
task manager, alg.exe "is" running, so what is strange is why
is it running if I turned it off the way Microsoft recommends,
and in doing it that way it tells me that the Windows Firewall
is OFF (thru Local Area Connections Properties Dialog box)?
Don't get me wrong, I have NO complaints with SP2 otherwise,
all my programs are running normally without incidence, but I
don't like being lulled into believing a program is off if it
isn't, and if I would continue to let it run (alg.exe) will it
indeed cause a problem since Norton is running as well? I've
been able to avoid viruses, worms etc. by keeping my computer
up to date (firewall, antivirus, windows update, adaware and
spybot), so I don't want any problems now.
Thanks again,
Pam
P.S. Why do your post's show an attachment? I don't open
these and have always wondered why someone would include them
in a newsgroup post.

check your task manager
right click in toolbar and choose "task manager" now choose
"processes" and look for alg.exe (that's the firewall running)
Also I believed if you have it checked marked and NOT disabled
in services through Adm. Tools then it's on.
Good Luck to you

Serenity: I was actually turning something off in the
"Startup" tab, but when I went to msconfig it opened with
the
"Services" tab displaying. While it was displayed I noticed
that Windows Firewall was running, and I thought that was
odd,
since I had already turned it off via the way mentioned in
my
first post and below. So it occurred to me that I might
have
to turn Windows Firewall off, the way you suggested, thru
Admin Tools, but I wasn't sure if I should, hence the
mention
of unchecking the Windows Firewall option in msconfig
"Services", I guess my explanation was confusing since I
didn't mention 'how' I would actually uncheck the firewall
feature.
What I really want to know is the Windows Firewall on or
off?
Which of the two settings actually controls the feature
(on/off) is it services in msconfig, or turning it off the
way
I originally did thru "Local Area Connections
Properties>Advanced tab>Settings>Choose option to turn
firewall Off. With the Firewall running in "services"
doesn't
that mean exactly that, that it is running, or am I wrong?
Below (8-23-04/10:06 P.M. Pacific time) there is a post
about
Auto Update, and one of the options for turning it off after
it has "already" been turned off is unchecking it in
"Services" See Maurice N~MVP re: Auto-update fully off.
Still
updating? After reading this post, I wondered if the
Windows
firewall was actually turned off the way I did it. I want
to
use my existing firewall, and thought that running 2
firewalls
was not a good idea, because they would conflict in someway,
so I want to make sure that Windows firewall is actually
off.
Thanks,
Pam
