I have a clean build of XP Pro, new hard drive, etc...

Install goes fine. I'm trying to install SP2 off the Microsoft SP2 CD, and
it gets about half way into the install then give a:

"failed to install catalog files" - then something about the update only
worked partially.

I found a bunch of stuff on the web about renaming the "Catroot2"
folder...I've done this - and after doing that I get a different error (can't
recall)...

I shouldn't have to rename anything on a clean build...

Someone told me I should install SP1 first...

Would that help?

There is no need to install SP-1 and it would not help.
Renaming the catroot2 folder for such an error is the usual fix for such an
error.

You shouldn't have to rename anything on a clean build, but is it really a
clean build?
If something else is also installed, it is no longer a clean build and that
may be the cause of the problem.
Has anything else been installed such as antivirus, spyware blockers,
download accelerators etc?

Follow the Service Pack Installation Checklist:
