SP2 - Gremlins defeated

As a pathetic amateur in matters computer, I expect many of you are like me.
I tried to install SP2, but came across all sorts of problems - the Internet
connection had disappeared, system restore wouldn't work, the printer icon
had vanished into thin air. After several installs and uninstalls, I was
inspired by to "repair" my WIN XP Home. So I shoved in
the original CD (2002) and did a "repair", the secret being that you don't
fall for the first "Repair Windows" but check "Set Up Windows" which then
identifies the fact that you already have WIN XP Home. Then you click R for
repair and away you go. You end up with your original 2002 installation,
with no updates and no SP1. You then pop in your SP2 CD and update, and much
to my astonishment it all came out in perfect order. From which I assume
that SP2 updates everything at one go.

Anyhow, if you are close to despair, as I was, try this as a last resort. It
might even work in your case as well.

Congrats on the repair install of XP. Best congrats for having & using the SP2 CD.

Note of caution to other readers: XP Repair-install is not for total newbies. Plus keep in mind if you do not have SP2 on CD ---- do not go on the internet to get it (or any page) --- you will be missing significant XP security updates.
Order & wait for the SP2 CD. Then update to SP2.

Thanks Maurice

I had the funny feeling when the SP2 CD was in action that it was somehow a
much more thorough installation than my previous attempts with the CD, as
though all sorts of files were being installed which were skipped on the
previous installations. It certainly took 10 minutes longer. So there you
are.

My son-in-law works with MS in Seattle. I have told him the good news. He
has offered me a job.........
