SP2 Hangs on Backup of Registry

My Windows XP SP2 hangs or freezes when it gets to Backing Up
Files--Registry. It stops there and does nothing else. I tried uninstalling
SP2, but it doesn't change anything. So far SP2 has not been successfully
installed on my machine. What could be the problem?

My friend is having the same problem it says it cannot back up registry
c:\windows\ntservicepack unistall reg000135
If you happen to find a soultion to this please contact me asap
And if I find a solution I'll let you know

I wonder if i have the whole thing downloaded? In add/remove programs it
list Windows SP2 as only 21.8MB. I thought when it started to download it
was in neighborhood of 71MB. Also, when i try to reinstall, it shows 0MB to
be installed. When i hit install, it initializes and goes directly to the
Wizard that instructs me to close all programs. Then i close MSN, Mcafee
firewall and viruscan but nothing else. Then when Wizard starts it runs
perfectly until it hits the part where it starts trying to backup registry
files. It just hangs there with no messge or error message or anything. i
left it on overnight but still just sitting there the next morning. Any
ideas?

Nothing yet. i also noticed a huge decrease in hard disk free space, from
75% free space down to 61% free space. I am not installing this thing if i
can help it i guess.
