sp2 hangs when finishing

I have tried downloading XP sp2 manually from windows
update website. I have tried letting WU install sp2
automatically. Both installs hang after everything has
apparently been installed.

The Windows XP Service Pack 2 Setup Wizard
indicates, "Finishing Installation", details
read "Running processes after install".

The Automatic Updates dialogue reads "Installing Windows
XP Service Pack 2 (update 1 of 1)..." and the overall
progress indicates approximately 50% complete.

One machine (2.5 ghz dual xeon 1gb XP Pro), has been in
this state for over 18 hours. Should I end the processes,
and utilize System Restore on this system? When I do, I
probably won't be able to use WU any more (learned from
recent experience). HELP!!!

I had the same problem. I suppose by now you must have ended the
process, so this is just some advice for others who may be looking for
an answer. I've read all sorts of drastic solutions - one of which was
to end task, uninstall sp2, roll back to the last restore point then
reinstal sp2 in safe mode.

Or, try the easy way: hit CTRL+ALT+DEL and kill any processes that are
in lower case (except update.exe, explorer.exe, and your update
package name.exe) one at a time. Between each one, give it a minute to
see if the hard drive activity light shows any signs of life. If so
you should be back in business!

I had to end a couple of ATI TV tuning processes, task manager, and
symantec's updater before mine came back to life. Also remember to
kill all processes relating to your firewalls and anti-virii instead
of simply disabling the program.

Good luck!
