SP2 hangs at running processes after install step

I've tried to install SP-2 twice with disastrous results.

The installation and computer hangs at the same point each time, "Running
processes after Install" step.

The only way out of it is to reboot, start in safe mode, remove SP-2, then
reboot and use "system restore".

I have turned off my virus protestation and pop-up blocker, and downloaded
sp-2 and installed it from disk.

This sucks! Any ideas?

You're not alone. I get the same error. And, to add insult to injury, when I
tried to log the problem with Microsoft I received (after carefully
documenting everything) the message that 'transmission failed'. Apparently
they don't want to hear about it.

How long did you wait for the "Running processes after install" step to
complete? My installation took quite a long time. I thought the process had
hung, but just let it run and it completed. You may have to wait a long
time.

I have the same exact issue. Also, I've waited over 12 hours for this to
"unhang" but it doesn't help to wait. It just sits there.

I've waited over 12 hours and it is still hung. Any other suggestions?

Well it worked for me, but not without some scares. First, when installing I
got a message stating that installing in SAFE mode was not recommended.
Great. Then, when the system restarted, I got the security center welcome
screen. Ok, so far so good. Exitign that I got.... nothing. Just my
wallpaper. No taskbar, CTRL-Esc did nothing, right clicking on the wallpaper
did nothing. CTRL-ALT-DEL brought up the task manager which showed very
little running. Several re-boots got the same result. I was able to use task
manager to start iexplore, which let me get to Microsoft, I attempted to open
a chat window in the support site. I felt as if I was in some sort of bizarre
alternate dimension as I watched the estimated wait time steadily climb,
pausing only at 13 Minutes, 13 seconds for a while, before increasing.
Frustrated, I re-booted again. This time I brought up the safe mode window.
On a hunch, I selected normal startup and, low and behold, it worked! At
close to midnight now I 'm beat. Hopefully this is the end. I guess I'll
find out tomorrow if everything works.

Thanks, Mike, for passing on the solution.

Cheers,
Dave
