My daughter-in-law installed the SP2 update through Windows Updater this
morning and after it finished, all of Office XP had disappeared as well as
all of her files in My Documents. Please advise on what to do. We tried a
system restore, but it crashed midway through and had no effect.

Search for a document, file etc that was in My Documents.
When you find one, the others should be there also.

You may need to reinstall Office using the CDs.

I tried that, but it doesn't find any of the files she knows she has. My
Documents does work now, but it's missing all the newer files from February
2004 onwards. All of Office XP is still missing. Some other programs were
not deleted and remain on her desktop and she is able to use IE, so it
doesn't appear to be an explorer.exe problem. Any more suggestions? She
called HP - the computer's manufacturer, and they said they've had many
complaints like this since SP2 was released, but no solutions except to
reformat the hard drive.

Reformatting will not help locate the missing data.

Make sure you are also searching hidden files.
Open My Computer.
Click Tools
Click Folder Options
Click View tab
Check "Show hidden files and folders"
Uncheck "Hide extensions..."
Uncheck "Hide protected..."
Click OK and follow prompts.
Search again.
Set settings back to original when done.
