SP2 update has failed twice now with the same error 0x800703FB: System could
not allocate the required space in a registry log.
There is no remedial course of action suggested. Rollback of install appears
to have worked.
This is a Dell Inspiron 2650 laptop.
There is plenty of free disk space: Approx. 20Gb. Here are the last few
lines of c:\windows\svcpack.log. Thanks in advance for any help.

Are you doing this update under the Administrator account?
Protected keys? Virtual Memory custom size and too small?

Try using the Performance Settings and User Profiles Settings
(in the System Properties, Advanced tab--press Win-Break)
for clues. Running RegMon while the update was in progress
might also be informative. The error category the code is being
put in is authorization (8007) so activating auditing might be another
alternative.

Otherwise my guess would be that it is an erroneous error message
generated by another condition. As with the last time this problem
was reported it is not clear to me if this install is being done using
WUv4, WUv5, or manually. If in fact it is being done using WUv4
I suggest first updating with 842773 and then switching to WUv5.

Hmm... others have reported a related problem with branches.inf
being marked Read Only (hence somehow unusable). Check for
something like that too. E.g. in a command window with current
directory set to %windir%\inf enter: (e.g.)
attrib | find /v "A "

Good luck
