No idea on the error code, I have my own, but if you can
boot into safe mode you can restore your previous
configuration.

I also have exactly the same problem, no-one seems to have any idea why.
I think that I will probably skip sp2 now since my system is already very
stable and secure.
If you're 'techy' don't worry about it; you're probably already safe !!!!

I am also having the same problem - I have tried several times as well. I
prevously had an error code where I could not get any updates - the solution
was to stop the update service, rename the Software Distribution directory,
and restart the service. I have been able to get other updates, but not SP2.

Yup. Happens here too. Maybe some MS guy would teach us how to solve it.
First time I updated I left my computer over night to download and install
SP2, but in the morning I found it "canceled" in the install history. Next,
the windows udpate would not do anything but display an error code (which I
don't remember) so after following the newsgroup I removed
C:\windows\SoftwareDistribution and it started to work again. I pushed again
"install SP2" and it started to work until an error "cannot install catalog
files". And then this error.

Well, hopefully this SP2 would solve my microphone not working issue, cos if
it won't then I'm not really interested in it ...

And, yes, another one to add to the list. I've tried 4 times now and SP2
fails to install every time. From the time I click "Express Install" to the
time it fails is about 4 minutes. Not far into the install at all.

Same here... I also am able to get other updates, but the download never goes
past 0% then fails with the same error code.

Dear Bill, please dedicate one of your minions to help us. Thx.

Hi

Some things to try for error FFFFFC06 (Windows XP):

1)
Delete or rename the Catroot2 folder (you need to temporary stop the
Cryptographic service to do this), and use regsvr32.exe to register
the following DLLs: Softpub.dll, Wintrust.dll, Initpki.dll

I have created a batch file that amongst several things cleans up the
Catroot2 folder for you, and registers the mentioned DLLs.

Go to
http://www.michna.com/kb/WxSP2.htm#C...Service_Pack_2

Look for fixdb.bat under "Error 0x800710D9 Unable to read from
or write to the database". Download and run it.

2)
If the above doesn't help, rename (or just delete) the
SoftwareDistribution folder and see if it helps.

You can use the procedure described here:

http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...cleid=21&ln=en

Note that a side effect of renaming or deleting the SoftwareDistribution
folder is that you lose your WU v5 History listing (not critical).
