SP2 Installation unsuccessful - Help!

I am trying to install the SP2 update on Windows XP Professional. When I
first attempted it, the system hung every time, at the first prompt when the
message was ~"Inspecting your system". Cancel didn't work, had to end task
to get out of it. I turned off all the background tasks, like Norton AV, and
tried again.

Now, the system doesn't hang up, but I get an "Installation was
unsuccessful" message immediately after starting the installation.

Any suggestions what to try next?

I'm new to this and don't know how to direct you to another thread... but
your problem reads like the one I had so you may want to search for a thread
titles "Failed Updates" started 10/21/04.

I posted in this thread the summary of what I did to solve this problem on
my machine... maybe it will work on yours!
