SP2 installed from CD - ccApp program not responding and CPU loop

After 4 months of stability on XP-PRO with all known fixes applied, I decided
to install SP2. Since I'm on a boat with a slow SPRINT link, I ordered the
CD - and installed from that.

I've had two complete lockups with svchost reported at 95+% CPU Busy
(Pentium 2, 500 MHz, 2Gig), and more than a dozen cases where ccApp reported
"Program not responding" for either Explorer or Outlook.

Nothing else was started by me except the SPRINT-provided internet link
using Smith Micro software.

Should I back off SP2 or is there something I can do first.

ccapp.exe is a process belonging to Norton AntiVirus 200X.
It is responsible for the auto-protect and email checking
facilities, both of which will not function correctly if
this service is stopped.

My method of installing sp2 from the CD : clean boot

How to perform a clean boot in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-
us;310353

Click Start, click Run, type msconfig in the Open box,
and then click OK.
On the General tab, click Selective Startup,
and then clear the Process System.ini File,
Process WIn.ini File, and Load Startup Items check boxes.

You cannot clear the Use Original Boot.ini check box.

On the Services tab, select the Hide All Microsoft
Services check box, and then click Disable All.
Click OK, and then click Restart to restart your computer.

DO NOT CLEAR Load System Services .
again
DO NOT CLEAR Load System Services .

when completed reset

I'm not sure what this accomplishes. It seems I have disabled all my virus
protection, removed some of my internet support, and haven't made any
permanent change - since as soon as I revert to "normal" everything is back
as it was - including some processes that are started more than once and a
few I no longer use.

How do I make the changes permanent without running in selective start every
time. Seems the knowledge base says exactly what you said (thank you), but
doesn't deal with the issue that I still don't know what is sending my system
into a loop - and now I no longer have virus protection and my internet link
(Sprint) drops every 3 minutes or so.

Pardon any typos, I have to work fast to get this out before the next crash.

Is there any hope, or must I back off SP2? Should I remove virus protection
- is there any substitute that does work with SP2?

Do you know which service is looping?
For a start you could get the PID from Task Manager
and then use TaskList /SVC /FI "PID eq nnn"
to show which service(s) that svchost.exe process contains.
If you're lucky it will be one of the ones with only one or two services.

Also are you getting any entries in Event Viewer (application or system
log) which could give you any hints?

Good luck

...."2 gig" ????
I hope that is what it reported and not your free space as the initial
installation needs at least 2 gig for backups/temp files etc which will
eventually free up, for the most part..

I don't know which service is looping - because it no longer loops.
As soon as I ran MSCONFIG (according to the thread above), the problem
stopped.

As long as I stay in SELECTIVE STARTUP, the problem does not recur. I don't
know how to make the current settings permanent - but selective startup seems
to work OK now. Thank you.

Peter,

The "2 gig" should have been "1/2 gig" and refers to the RAM installed on my
computer. Sorry for the confustion and thank you for the help. Running in
Selective Startup and removing duplicate startup tasks seems to have fixed
the problem.
