checked that Java is enabled and it still won't work on some puzzles and
games....

understands applet tag but isn't running the applet. Browser completely
ignoring the tag"....

anybody have the same problem and could help me with this????

I had problems but I do not know why. I removed and installed several times
then I downloaded 1.4.2_05 manually and installed. Then it worked. Very
frustrating. Also, I remember that the installer was corrupted during the
first download and had to be removed.

I am not sure that this will help except for the fact that I finally got it
to work. Good luck, David

thanx, but also tried that and it still isn't working... have also tried all
suggestions from Java, nothing seems to work... did you have to set up
anything in the "Java Web Start"... have no idea what that is all about, but
it appeared with the install...

Sorry that it did not work. I kept getting this message "the java runtime
environment cannot be loaded from
<C:\progra~1\java\J2re14~2.2_05\bin\hotshot\jvm/dll>. After several failed
attempts, I got a similar message that pointed to a Java file in Doc &
Settings/your name/local settings/application data/{7148F0A6- & so on}/Java
Runtime environment. I clicked that let it let me remove what I think was
the bad install even though I had already used add/remove programs to remove
it. Then the manual install worked.

GOOD LUCK, David

Well I see that I am not a loner. I had to un-install SP2 then I started
getting Spooler SubAssembly errors, so I had to do a quick recovery and bring
my laptop to factory setting and re-install all my software. I am waiting on
Microsoft tech to tell me what is going on. The SP2 help line sure doesn't
know what is going on with java applications.

SUN JAVA DOES NOT WORK-- PERIOD! It will not make any difference what you
do, the Sun JAVA does not work with Microsoft windows!! It will alway give
you errors, hang, not shut down properly, etc. Don't think it is your
machine.. it is the JAVA!!

I have done everything imaginable to try to fix it! IT is UNFIXABLE!! And I
have proved over and over to people who "thought" their Sun Java was working,
that it is not!

I have unloaded everything, reinstalled a million times, etc - each install
and update adds new problems. I hsve redone my windows, my machine -- all
to no avail. I have nothing but problems since buying a new machine! (
actually 2.. took the first one back because of this problem, which I now
realize was NOT the machine but SUN JAVA-- and thus I am now stuck with a
less quality machine then my first one ).

At first I thought it was just my new machines and the processor. along with
the window XP Home program, but as I researched it, I found it was definitely
the SUN JAVA. I have the latest version and there is no way to make it work
properly!

SPECS:
windows XP home version
Internet Explorer 6.0
Sun Java ( latest version )
3.4 Intel processor
Hyper threading
1 mg of memory
etc

You cannot close all java windows without going to Task Mgr and ENDING the
window that is not working properly or won't shut down. Please note, it will
not tell you in Task Mgr that this window is "not responding" but will make
it appear that all is okay. It is not, and once you clear the window that
is 'hangin' all will be okay again plus the error message will verify the
"hangin" or other error state of the java window!

SUN JAVA and MICROSOFT need to come up with a better solution to their java
woes! The old Microsoft Java worked fine... and Sun needs to back off and
let Microsoft have their java rights.. There is obviously only one way to
make java and microsoft work .. and that is the OLD WAY! These continual
suits against Microsoft cause they have the market or their program is
similar to another is ridiculous. There are only so many ways to DESIGN a
program and no one should make someone redesign their program cause it is
similar to another. As long as they wrote the program, the similarities
should not matter -- cause like I said.. there are only so many ways to do a
procedure or process right, and it is ridiculous to think that just cause it
is "the best way" that they are stealing the code.

Example... we went through this with WORD PERFECT and MICROSOFT WORD. The
reason Microsoft is the inferior program when comparing the two, is cause
Long ago Microsoft was made to change anything remoting like Word Perfect.
I also realize that microsoft had the advantage cause they had the money to
put their product with all the computers but.... making WORD change their
design cause it as done like WP was not the solution. We, today, stuck with
the inferior design of WORD cause Corel's WP could not compete with the giant
Microsoft. Does any of this make sense?

No... the consumer, are the ones being held hostage in this game and it
needs to stop.

Hi Tom,

Works, huh?? Now you realize we are talking Java and applets within
Internet Explorer while on sites on the internet, right ?? How do you use
your machines and is your little java icon showing on your task bar that you
are really using something "java." And are you sure you are using "sun java?"

Also, all tests say mine is "working" (on some sites it seemed to take hours
to get it to work - hahaha) and also that I have the "latest version".

I can USE it, even with errors a lot of the time, unless I go to SHUT IT
DOWN, where as it will lock me up, hang, use up memory ( if the problem was
not detected and ended through task mgr ) but that is not considered
"working" and defnitely not properly and even more definitely "not" like the
OLD MICROSOFT JAVA!!! It is totally frustrating to do what I done for eons
but with a million problems I never encountered before.

OH... and don't forget how LONGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG it takes to load an applet,
as we are talking applets in particular.

Many times I will get error messages, which many are seeing with some of the
last updates to the SUN JAVA, such as "exception error," but still be able to
use the function -- until you go to END THAT WINDOW or start a new one, etc.
With one update my "ABOUT JAVA" window was even locking on me. I had to
"removed" everything from "add remove programs," redo java, and it did
correct this problem. BUt all I was doing was an update when this occurred.

I also find it especially annoying not to be able to SHUT DOWN one thing
that is "not responding" in Task Mgr, rather than Task Mgr taking everything
java down when you end just one item.

This is a new machine, latest technology, and both intel 3.4 machines I
purchased worked the same way -- but they are the first I have used the "new
Java" and the only machines I have had problems with in my possession (about
8). But also the only machines using sun java.

Sorry to say, I knew about this problem and didn't mean to "eliminate" my
old java. That was a flick of the finger mistake I deeply regret when
downloading updates.

As I said.. I have proved over and over to many TECHIES and CONSULTANT
friends, that their java is not really working as expected without the
problems I am describing. Some will say.. 'oh, yeah.. it will lock up!l'
and if you have to 'end it, you will shut down anything using java'. Some
take this in stride as "par for the course" and not a flaw but it is not
performing as I would expect NOR is it performing flawlessly as the Old Java.
Plus I find it so frustrating that I am thinking of redoing my machine with
the old WIN 98, which included the old java -- and which I had NO problems
NOR was I bothered by all the viruses and hackers, etc that target my WIN XP.

So, Tom -- IF your java really works, then what is the secret?? I have
tried EVERYTHING posted in this site, contacted SUN, and it seems that My
Problems are "known issues" regardless of whether you realize it or not.

If you know of anything that would make mine work -- or a conflict such as
some software or hardware that might be a known problem with SUN JAVA, I
would be greatly interested in checking it out to see if it could be a
source. But so far have come up nothing other than what I described here as
"known problems"!

But thanks for your input.

"IF" you know what you are talking about, answer my questions, and give me
some additional details - machines you are running, specs of those machines,
anything you did special, type of sites you are using that use java applets
and you are not having any problems with, etc. Also, does your "Windows Task
Mgr" work properly?? It will with anything but SUN JAVA situations.

I, too, know what I am talking about when I say it does not work! I am a
very experienced user with advanced skills in various areas of the IT
environment. I have worked in the main frame/emulating/networking/pc
environment for "eons;" program in various languages and data base programs;
troubleshoot computers, programs, and networks; evaluate and buy software,
hardware; critique and develop websites but not an advanced website builder;
et cetera. I am a jack of all trades, nevew will master it all 'cause it
changes too fast -- and know that there is always something more to learn.

If you have never had to END a window that says it is RESPONDING but is NOT
in Task Mgr, you are not using the java that I am using OR as I use it. This
is a known issue in WIN XP and seems to be connected to Sun Java.

Now... tell me how you use JAVA and what you think is different on your
machine that YOURS is working and "mine ( ours )" is not ?

Again.. your saying IT WORKS and you know what you are talking about mean
NOTHING!!! I have proved too many like you wrong who THOUGHT their Sun Java
was working and it was not. They were having the same issues as I "am"
having and didn't recognize it for what it is.

My specs again:

--WIN XP HOME (but it is not working any better with PRO which I will be
installing just to verify that very soon on my NON working machine)
--INTERNET EXPLORER 6.0 w/ sp2
--3.4 Intel processor
--550 hyperthreading
--1 mg of ram

My two machines that will not work properly with SUN JAVA were manufactured
by Gateway and Dell. But I have also verified the java was not working
properly on an HP, EMACHINE, various other machines with varying processor
speeds, et cetera.

Can't find any common denominator for the problem other than SUN JAVA. I
also read where SUN has some kind of legal issue going on right now with
Microsoft involving needing secret code specs or info, and I think it is
reference to this issue of trying to get Sun Java to work with Microsoft
products.

So, Tom Pepper Willet, tell us why YOUR Sun Java works and no one else's
does! We are all anxiously awaiting your "inside" info! Especially me! )
