SP2 killed performance

My son recently installed SP2 on his computer. His computer is now
nearly unusable.
The computer has become extremely slow. MP3 files don't open but can be
dragged and dropped into Winamp to open them. Devices that connect via
USB don't connect. Automatic update no longer functions. System restore
no longer works.
Is there any way to get back to the way it was before SP2 was installed?
He tried reinstalling Windows XP but it wouldn't let him because it
said the version on his computer was newer. What can he do?

try updating your video driver for some strange reason sp2 does not like old
video drivers and if that doesnt work you should try to reformat your pc

Thanks, that sounds simple enough. I mentioned that to him last week but
he said he couldn't do it. I took him to mean there was nothing there to
remove. I just went to his computer to look and there are 14 items all
installed at the same time that have (SP2) after the name. Now I don't
know if he didn't recognize what to remove or if he tried it and it
didn't function.
He's out of town until late tonight so I'll ask him later. If possible,
we'll remove all 14 items (unless someone else comes up with a brilliant
solution that lets us leave SP2 where it is).

Well, my son came home. I showed him some of the replies to my
questions. He went to control panel and started to remove the 14 items
that said (SP2) . Most required him to restart the computer before
doing the next one. I don't know how far he got but the last restart
wouldn't let him restart the computer. Windows is dead. He tried to
start it in safe mode. That didn't work either. Then he went to bed. :-(

Updates with (SP2) after the name are updates that were installed PRIOR to
SP2 being installed (and after SP1 was installed) - they should have been
removed by the install of SP2, which would then be uninstallable itself
(reinstating those entries)
I suspect that SP2 was never properly installed in the first place.

You may be able to recover the system by booting to Safe Mode, and running
System Restore to get back to where you were yesterday.

you should probably reformat that will take everything off and you can start
fresh which will give you a massive performance boost

*possibly* true - but only if you discount the days taken to re-optimise the
system! (and the aggravation involved!!!)

Now that you tell me that, I'm sure you are right about SP2 never being
properly installed.
Safe mode isn't an option because windows doesn't open that way either.
When I got up today my son was working on the computer. He found he
could still get it to boot from the CD so he is now reinstalling the
original windows XP from the CD.
