SP2: Lost CDROM's in DevMan, unstable

Since SP2, computer (Intel D865PERL-K w/3ghz, 1gig ram, ATI AIW 9600 pro
video), won't stay running even overnight without crashing. Prior, was
stable without crashes for months. The 2-CDROM's are gone from My Computer.
In Device Man, yellow ! with error "Windows successfully loaded the device
driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)".

The updated BIOS shows both CD's & SATA HD. XP Pro SP2 doesn't see them.
Many MS Online Crash Analysis results show memory errors or Driver errors. I
was about to run memtest86, but I couldn't see the CD burner's to burn the
image. Updated all the ATI video drivers (Catalyst, DAO/DVD, Multimedia
Center, Remote 2.5) with no relief. After reading posts, I am concerned that
removing SP2 will cause irreparable damage and huge hours of
rebuilding/re/loading everything.

Any ideas?

Return to stability. MemTest86 showed bad RAM. Although each 512mb stick
tested OK by themselves, together they failed. New RAM & tested OK.

As for the CDROMS - see Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 314060. However,
after applying the KB fix, you need to reload any burning programs. I still
don't know exactly what caused the fault, SP2 or something else.
