I just uninstalled XP-SP2, but lo and behold my auto-update downloaded it
again. So there it sits, awaiting one mouse click. How can I rid my machine
of this monster at this point? Thanks,

First turn off Automatic Update:
Right click My Computer
Click Properties
Click Automatic Update tab.
Or to leave Automatic Update enabled and temporarily stop SP-2:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/pro.../sp2aumng.mspx

Follow step 5 on this link do delete the downloaded but not installed
SP-2:
