Just an FYI..
I have read messages in this forum about it taking a long time to receive
the free SP2 Cd from MS.
I received an SP2 update CD in the mail from MS just 4 days after I filled
out the web page order form ( I'm in the northeast US) . That's what I call
service!

Wonderful! Now make sure your system is prepared for SP2 by checking out
the information on the Windows Update website. Don't install it before you
do!

That is still well within the time advertised on the MS
site, they say 4-6 weeks. It may be because of the
availability of the CDs and mailers in Europe or perhaps the
mail system doesn't work as well in Europe as it does in the
States. Was there a postmark (date) on the package?

Sure, we Europeans still use pigeons to deliver mail.

The fact remains that European MS customer often get a bad deal:
eg: we don't get toll-free phone support for SP2 - in Holland MS
uses a 900 line, although the actual tech support is free.

BTW: if the MS support engineer decides that the problem
is not SP-related or represents an "additional issue",
a PPI fee of 50 EUR ($60)+ tax (home)
up to 265 Euro (over $300 for pro products)+ tax can be charged
overhere
http://support.microsoft.com/gp/ppifaq/ (It dispays the Dutch version here,
in the US you will get different info)

It happened to me:
When my C: boot partition failed to boot after the MS GDI+ patch
the Dutch MS phone support techn:

1- seemed unaware of the fact
that the Recovery Console from an original XP OEM CD
has a documented bug that prevents it from starting:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...EN-US;q308402&

2-quickly decided that the issue was not "probably" not patch-related (...)
and a clean XP install was best.
I had the distinct impression that this non-paid MS patch support was very
basic -
I wonder if my problem would have been solved by paying MS for this "issue".

Pigeons? You have pigeons?

We don't get free tech support over here either, they charge
$35 US for tech support that is not for a retail product,
that includes ALL of the computers sold with Windows factory
installed. HP/Compaq, Dell, et al have to support those
people.

To fix the internal bug, slipstream your XP CD and SP2.

Thanks for the advice about slipstreaming SP2 and XP.

Unfortunately my OEM (Medion Germany, www.medion.com and
www.medionusa.com ) made it blatantly clear on the phone
that "old" (=2 years) XP PCs will not be supported with new SP2
compatible drivers/softw.

It's a pitty I'm left in the cold by a company that does show an XP SP2
logo on its website that only links to MS (Medion does
not provide updated SP2 drivers for most of it "older" XP PCs)

The other unfortunate fact remains that Microsoft
charges 2X as much in Europe (50 Euro per incident =
US $60+ tax!) for
Paid Incident Support ($35 in the US)

Wages/living standards are roughly equal,
Why is MS charging *twice as much for its support here in Europe?
Basically it's the same service.

I don't know about the cost of telephone support in Europe.
Perhaps European support is provided by European labor,
while tech support in the US may come from the USA or
Singapore, or India, what ever is cheapest.

It is very nice over here, our taxes are low (at least as
long as Kerry isn't President) and you're welcome to move
west.

I've got to make myself a slipstreamed CD, that's why I was
thinking about it.

How many WWII bombs are they finding every year now in the
mud? Does anybody over there not remember that Hitler and
the Nazi movement "only wanted peace." Of course peace
meant something different, it meant that they would have
conquered all of Europe, Africa and maybe a few other
places. Strange how every few years some body comes along
who wants to do the same things.

MS Tech support is provided locally here
(with some transfer between Belgium-Holland) -
the support techn was native Dutch, which may indeed explain
the high PPI fee (about US$ 60 plus 21% VAT/tax)
