Norton 2004?

Wait for a fee days and the symantec service update will
update your norton antivirus.

I have this experience with norton 2004.

Actually this isn't a Microsoft problem. Symantec says
what it is is that Norton Antivirus has something built
in that wont allow 3rd party products to be able to
identify that it's installed because if it could that
could be exploited. However if you run Live Update they
have a fix to allow Security Center to see it. But just
because Security Center doesn't see it doesn't mean it's
not working.

Actually they have made Windows Firewall weaker than most
3rd party products simply so they won't be accused of
trying to "monopolize" that market. But they are in
a "damned if they do, damned if they don't" situation.
They are getting routinely beaten up because the firewall
doesnt regulate outbound traffic, but if it did the same
people criticizing that it doesn't would accuse them of
doing exactly what you are accusing them of. But you are
right, most people don't have good security products and
when they get infected it always ends up MS getting
blamed. Personally I think they have done a good middle
of the road solution but people have to be aware that to
get the best firewall you have to get something more than
just Windows Firewall. And that is also the position of
MS people i have seen in interviews.

Hi

Control Panel/Security Center, click on the "Change the Way Security
Center Notifies Me" link in the left pane.

If this setting is reset at each reboot:

Someone in another newsgroup thread indicated that a Symantec service
was the cause for this behavior on his computer (I can't remember in
what newsgroup though).

To "solve" this problem, disable the Security Center service:

Start/Run --> services.msc

Find "Security Center" in the list, double click on it, set
"Startup type" to Disabled.

There is also a Group Policy setting available to disable the
Security Center (Start/Run--> gpedit.msc).

Take a look at the chapter for the Security Center in
06_CIF_Maintenance.DOC

What settings are added or changed in Windows XP Service Pack 2?
Group Policy settings (page 26 for me)

06_CIF_Maintenance.DOC ("Changes to Functionality in Microsoft Windows XP
Service Pack 2, Part 6: Computer Maintenance") can be downloaded from here:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en

Note: WinXPSP2_Documentation.zip contains all the .doc downloads...

Hi

For Norton Antivirus:

After installing XP Service Pack 2, the message "Your computer might
be at risk . . . " appears
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...rc=con_web_nam

and

http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/sp2/faq.html

http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/sp2/support_doc.html

If there is no updates available for you:

Control Panel/Security Center, click on the "Change the Way Security
Center Notifies Me" link in the left pane.

Torgeir!!

Thank you - this helped greatly!

Now - I only have to find out why msconfig does not run - and I still wonder
- what else may be wrong -- like when I boot up I get a "Web Server Not
Available" - what the heck is that?

Ignore all the other panicked and uninformed replies in
this thread.

Run LiveUpdate from within Norton.

Problem solved.
