SP2 Will Not Install-Help!

I have tried everything (I think). I have attempted installation of SP2 at
least 6 times and just spent an hour on the phone with Microsoft SP2
support. Their only answer was to run repair or reformat. Since I just
recently ran repair, I am hoping someone else has a better answer. (I have
the SP2 CD.)

Here is what happens:

After it does the inspection of the computer and backs up the files and
starts copying files, it gets to a point (different point each time) and
stops, telling me there is a copy error with a particular file (the file is
different each time). I have also tried in Safe Mode with the same problem.
The specific error is:

Copy Error
An error occurred while copying file ----------- (always different file)
Cannot copy file to destination directory.
Click Retry to retry or Cancel to cancel.

Retrying does not do anything.

Clicking Cancel gives a dialogue box that asks if I want to continue without
copying the file. If I say yes, it gives me the same error again, but with a
different box asking me to check the source location of the file to make
sure the file is there. I check the source and the file is there to be
copied, but
clicking OK does not work. It tries to copy again and gives the same error.
The only other choice is to cancel and it restores everything back to the
way it was.

Any suggestions? Please!

Steve

Hi Steve,

How much space do you have left on your OS-Drive? To install SP2, together
with the backup of the files, you'd need at least 500megs free space. Check
what the size of your paging file is. If you pagefile has reached it's
limits, it'll come up with all kind of weird errors.

Cheers,

Robert

Plenty of space. Over 30GB!

Page file is 1.6GB.

"Steve",

I am sorry that you have encountered this issue. There is a log that is
created for all of your windows update downloads. Would you mind opening
it, copying and pasting the latest and most relevant lines from that log
back here to the thread?

Try this procedure first:
1. Click Start
2. Click "Control Panel"
3. When Control Panel opens, double-click "Add/Remove Programs"
4. When "Add/Remove Programs" opens, search for Windows XP SP2.
5. Assuming you find it here, click the Change/Remove button to remove it.
6. Once it is removed, please download the redistributable package from the
following link: (please disregard the IT Professionals and Developers
portion of this, as it will run on an individual computer as well: (266 MB)

Short URL: http://tinyurl.com/3qrhg
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...5-9e368d3cdb5a

Remember to save it first, then install it. If you have trouble with this,
please send us the Windows Update log.

Here is the step by step procedure to copy from the Windows Update log:
On Windows XP:

1. Click Start
2. Click Run
3. type: %WINDIR%\WindowsUpdate.log
4. type the <Enter> key, or click OK
5. Next, when the log has opened, scroll all the way to the bottom.
6. Ensure this is the case by clicking anywhere inside the log and typing
the <CTRL> and <End> keys.
7. Now that you are at the bottom of the log, type <CTRL> then the <F> key
for Find.
8. When the Find window opens, in Direction click the "Up" radio button.
9. Still in the Find window, in the Find what: field, type in 0x and then
click the Find Next button.
10. You will find the very latest error, usually in a format such as
0x800732EF or 0xFFFFFB40.
11. Verify that this is related to your installation of XP SP2.
11. Copy the whole line this code is on, and perhaps a few others around it,
to let us understand the context.
12. Reply to this thread in this newsgroup, and paste the text you copied
from the log.

Sincerely,

Pat Walters [MSFT]

This was, Steve! Sort of...
The very last error of this log is in the wrong format. We need to keep
searching "up" to find one that has a "One, then X, then 8-digit" error
code, such as 0x80070005.

I apologize if I was not clear on this point.

Please do reply back to this post with the error and some surrounding text.

Sincerely,

Pat Walters [MSFT]

"Steve,"

Thank you for reposting, with this error. Unfortunately, this is one of
those errors where it essentially translates to, "There is nothing left to
do, so exiting." Would you mind searching again a little higher in the log
and reposting? Thank you.

Sincerely,

Pat Walters [MSFT]
