SP2, now USB port won't work

Installed SP2, had the same problem as many others, couldn't get my Windows
explorer to work, cd rw etc. After restoring to period prior to SP2, I can
get WE to work, but when I plug my card reader into the USB port, it tells me
port not found. Tried re-installing card reader software, to no avail. Any
thoughts?

Carey,

Seems nobody from Microsoft reads these. Don't know if I am barking up the
wrong tree but this is my reply to a posting today about USB ports not being
recognised after SP2 updates.

Regards

TonyB

"TonyB",

I'm sorry you think noone does. I am with Microsoft, and we do read these
newsgroups. Not only that, we have some fantastic volunteers and MVPs
monitoring these groups and helping for free. They are a valuable resource
and asset to both Microsoft and our customers. You should understand,
though, that getting to your question might take a little time.

Let me see if I understand what you have tried so far:
1. You successfully installed XP SP2.
2. After installing SP2, you failed to "see" a CD-RW drive. (Can I assume
you looked in Device Manager?)
3. Also, you lost the ability to use Windows Explorer.
4. You performed a System Restore to take you back in time before the
installation of SP2.
5. You tried to plug a USB card reader into your USB port, but nothing
happened.
6a. You went to Device Manager, and found NO USB ports, or
6b. You plugged in the USB card reader into your USB port, and you received
an error that said "port not found"

Please reply back to this thread and tell us if this is right.

In the meantime, also check the Device Manager and let us know if there is
even an entry there for USB.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Pat Walters [MSFT]

Pat,

Thanks for the reply. I think you have associated the wrong mail with my
name. I replied to a group of people who had installed SP2 sucessfully and
then installed the 4 SP2 updates posted around 15th December. Following the
install of the updates, USB devices no longer functioned.

I am quite happy to document what happened and what I have done so far to
try and get to the bottom of the problem if you are interested.

Best regards,

Tony B
