SP2 prevents programmes running in compatability mode?

after installing SP2 the following non-internet connection related stuff
happened:
1. programmes stopped running in compatability mode for 95, 98, me, 2000 etc.
2. no other account on the machine (all with admin rights) will open
3. the machine takes over 5mins to boot into my account
4. the machine crawls and virtually every programme causes hangs and crashes;
anyone experienced similar and got any suggestions, (i feel a complete
switch to linux comming on!)

I would suggest performing a Repair installation:

Then make sure your hardware and software is compatible with SP-2:

Then follow the Service Pack Installation Checklist:
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/spackins.htm

Or Linux as you suggested.
