SP2 problems with Sony computers

I have a Sony laptop and I will not be downloading the
SP2. Thus far, two Sony VAIO laptop users I've spoken to
(one being my brother) have had their computers virtually
ruined by downloading the SP2 update. In one case, my
friend is paying $3,000 to have the data recover from her
harddrive.

I download SP2 for my Dell desktop and, suddenly, the
performance of my computer has slowed. This is a four
month old computer with enough disk space, memory, speed,
power, etc. to run a small city and SP2 somehow has
screwed it up.

What is the deal here? Why is SP2 causing so many
problems? I am very upset that downloading a Microsoft
update has caused ill effects to my machine. This is not
what I expected the company.

Ben;
First, if your friend is paying $3,000 to have data recovered, it
shows the need everyone has for routine back-ups.
Data loss resulting from SP-2 installation is extremely rare.
Are you sure the data was gone and not just inaccessible.
There are usually quick fixes for what seems like data loss.
Many things, not just installations can cause data loss so it is
always a good idea to have current back-ups of all important data.

There may have been hardware or software compatibilities especially
with laptops.
Check with the manufacturer for that specific model.
See:
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/xpsp2.htm

Also following the Service Pack Installation Checklist can help
prevent installation issues resulting from SP-2:

Man, I would love to be that shop!!!....$3K to recover data, man you
could buy 1-2 laptops for that price.

I have installed SP2 on multiple systems, no problems. One was a Sony
Vaio laptop, worked like a champ.

One of the biggest issues I have seen is trying to upgrade to SP2 on a
computer that has spyware or a virus. Make sure your system is clean
of those two items before proceeding.

I have 2 Sony laptops, both of which refused to re-start after installing
SP2. Fortunately I had backed up everything on drive D including files and
settings. Nevertheless, after much searching and several attempts to follow
instructions to get started again I had to reformat drive C and start again.
Very time consuming and annoying. Now, back to SP1 and all minor (sic)
updates installed, Windows Update is pestering me to download and install
SP2. Anybody know how to stop this short of disabling automatic update. Can
we all assume that without SP2 installed, no further updates will be
available? Not Microsofts fault I know if Sony do not post sufficient SP2
specific preparation information for each machine, but if the 'all singing,
all dancing' ultimate operating system was in some way not the perfect
product it was sold as, then Microsoft have a responsibility to at least
provide a way of testing each computer for compatability before installing
SP2.
Postscript: All available driver updates from Sony and Drivers HQ were
installed prior to installing SP2 on both my machines.

Since you just reinstalled Windows XP, now is the best time to install any
Service Pack since not much else is installed.

If you had similar problems on multiple computers, what do they have in
common?

Hi,

Just recently I installed SP2 on a Sony Laptop. Can`t remember the model,
but its about 3 maybe 4 years old running XP Home. I had no problems with
the computer after the update. It restarted with no problems. Also prior
to updating it with SP2, I did prepare the computer for the upgrade.

Jeff

PS it was my mother-in-laws notebook, so had to make sure it worked after
the update and daily maintenance.

I'm noticing that most "failed" SP2 updates
appear to happen when a XP loaded with 1001 programs is updated.

Does an install on a "clean" XP(sp1) reduces the change of getting hit
with an "issue"?

The problems are not so much because there are many programs installed.
Most problems are caused by problems such as spyware, viruses and other
malware.
Other problems are caused by some type of corruption.
All problems, known or unknown should be resolved before installing any
update especially a Service pack.
A Clean Install is less likely to have any of these issues, so is more
likely to be successful.
But a well maintained computer is nearly as likely to also have a successful
installation.
